This website offers high-quality, sustainably sourced fish, shellfish, meat and other goodies from New Zealand

If any of you readers are from or have holidayed in New Zealand, you’ll surely agree with our assessment that one of the biggest perks of Kiwi livin’ is the abundant availability of pristine, sustainably sourced seafood. Here in HK, we often bemoan the fact that it’s hard to get our hands on the same quality stuff.

New website 178 Degrees has changed all that, offering the best of NZ foodstuffs, with all their products sourced from sustainably managed farms and fisheries. Their product list is relatively short but sweet, focusing on a core of seasonal fish (kingfish, tarakihi and king salmon), shellfish (various seasonal clams, oysters and mussels) and meat (lamb, Wagyu beef) – all packaged in an environmentally friendly manner. A nicely curated range of grocery items from New Zealand, all organic, is also available for purchase – from the likes of free-range eggs and blue cheese, to chocolate and manuka honey, to beer and mineral water.

Prices are reasonable when considering the quality of the produce. For example, five dozen medium-size, whole-shell organic Pacific oysters clock in at $1,080 – a good deal indeed, considering that a single oyster may set you back more than $60 when dining at a higher-end restaurant. In fact, diners have been able to enjoy 178 Degrees’ range of meat and seafood at select hotels and restaurants around town – including the Grand Hyatt and Ritz-Carlton hotels and Seafood Room in Causeway Bay – and now us lucky consumers have access to this premium selection of New Zealand produce.

We especially like the tips included with each product – take the eggs supplied by ethical NZ farmer Frenz, for instance. Each of their egg trays is labelled with a flock number. If you enter this number on the Frenz website, you’ll see exactly where the eggs were laid. How cool is that?

Delivery is $100 for online orders placed to Hong Kong Island, Discovery Bay, East and West Kowloon and Yau Tsim Mong – three working days’ lead time is recommended. For delivery to other locations, enquire for special arrangements. During February, 178 Degrees is offering 15 per cent off all purchases by using the discount code waitangi2017.
