Even though it’s located in the LANDMARK, don’t expect tourists or throngs of shoppers to come in flocks to Mak Mak, the new Thai restaurant occupying one of the quieter sides of the building facing Queen’s Road Central. The location may prove a respite, however, the food is forgettable and pricey, with perhaps the only bit of Thai tradition being the degree of spiciness, most evident in the soups and curry dishes. The problem with Mak Mak is probably lack of authenticity, especially evident in a city like Hong Kong, which is blessed with traditional locales that are proud ambassadors of the kingdom’s ancient culinary traditions.

During a lunch that lasted around two hours owing to unorganised service staff – which cost a whopping $1,100 (without wine or cocktails) – the best dishes were probably the green curry served with chicken and the pad Thai. Saying that, both dishes are typical, run-of-the-mill Thai standards one can find anywhere.

Verdict: for authentic Thai, head to Chachawan in Sheung Wan or anywhere in Wan Chai and skip this upscale joint.
