Sichuan chef extraordinaire Deng Huadong is set to bring his fiery flavours to Wanchai

Prime your palates for Elite Concepts’ latest bar and restaurant, Deng G, opening in collaboration with one of the most talented Sichuan chefs in China, Deng Huadong. Chef Deng’s partnership with Elite Concepts began back in 1988, when he teamed up with Paul Hsu – Elite’s founder – to open Sichuan Court in the Shanghai Hilton. They reunited in 2007 with the opening of Deng G in Shanghai.

Deng G’s Hong Kong outpost will serve up some of the most authentic and popular Sichuan dishes that spice lovers know and love including signatures of sliced pork with garlic and chilli, braised crab with preserved vegetables, crispy fish in spicy sauce and diced chicken with chilli and cashews. Chef Deng is known for using less oil than traditional Chinese chefs, so expect cleaner, more intense flavours. Interestingly, the menu is divided not by dish type or ingredients but by flavour profile, from mala (numbing and spicy) to sweet and sour – for the lightweights out there.

Deng G’s unique bar adds to the appeal. Helmed by mixologist Héktor Monroy, winner of the International Bartenders Association’s Best Latin American Mixologist of Europe and Best Shaker in Spain in 2010, the drinks list is heavy on baijiu and baijiu cocktails. If you’ve never sampled baijiu – China’s most popular (read: potent) alcoholic bevvy – we urge you to give it a try, but take it slow.

We’re also looking forward to checking out Deng G’s super-stylish interiors, with the second-floor bar and the main dining area and private rooms just above. Inspired by Chengdu’s – the capital of the province of Sichuan – bamboo forests, wood is a dominant theme throughout.

Deng G is set for a mid-September opening.
