With so many new restaurants and culinary concepts continually opening in Hong Kong, it's easy to become jaded with the foodie scene here. After a few recent uneventful experiences at new 'hotspots', I was feeling slightly underwhelmed by the revolving door of openings in the city.
When I was invited along to a cooking class by Unami Concepts, I was immediately intrigued by the idea of learning about the ingredients, technique and delivery of good, old-fashioned soul food (and then eating it!). I made my way to Bonham Road, found myself at the most unassuming building and ventured upstairs to Crafted 852. When I arrived at the venue, I was genuinely taken aback by the gorgeous and airy loft space that I found. The setting is like the most welcoming, contemporary flat you wished you lived in, full of intricate decorations and interesting artwork.
Chef Nolan warmly greeted the group of keen students, and I was immediately drawn to his obvious passion for the art of creating simple, hearty and good-quality food. There are no airs and graces about the teachings at Crafted 852; the aim is to learn as much as you can about the preparation and execution of honest food and then eat, drink and be merry! I instantly felt relaxed and eager to get my hands messy in the kitchen.
We learned how to make our own pasta – despite the surprisingly simple technique involved, it does take some mastering – and had so many laughs together kneading, cutting and cooking. Working in teams was a really fun way to get to know each other, and it added to the relaxed and casual atmosphere of the evening. A sinfully delicious sauce had been previously prepared by Chef Nolan, and we all sat around the table savouring every mouthful, clinking glasses and sharing stories. There is something supremely satisfying about eating food that you have made from scratch (with a little assistance from an expert!).
We were also lucky enough to sample some of the incredible produce available to buy at Crafted 852's online shop – let's just say I will no longer be buying my olive oil at the local supermarket!
I would thoroughly recommend Crafted 852 for any upcoming events; I am already locking in dates for a birthday celebration to gather friends around the table and make memories together. The venue would also be ideal for corporate events and team-building exercises.
A variety of cooking party packages are available starting from $480 per person.
