I didn’t have the chance to step inside new-and-improved Mr & Mrs Fox until now, but I’m thrilled to report that the renovations and new brunch menu are winners, going along with the fresh revamp of the attached EAST Residences.
Before previewing the food, the interior is something we have to talk about. Three-storey Mr & Mrs Fox’s new look can best be described as sophisticated with a millennial flair. I love the fresh vibe of the plants hanging from the ceiling, making the bar the centrepiece.
The restaurant continues to play around with the theme of books, but the soft pastel palette gives a sense of youthfulness. The door to Mr & Mrs Fox’s private event space on the top floor is hidden behind a wall of bookshelves!
For brunch ($275/person for 3 courses; +$188 for free-flow), the food remains indulgent, with a few health-conscious nods. There are more vegetarian options now, and some creative smoothies have been added to the menu. The mains are a mix of modern European and American classics that are great for sharing.
The pana nut smoothie ($68) kick-started my morning with its mash-up of papaya, banana, nutmeg, soy and vanilla.
Sharing appetisers include classic eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and caviar and savoury quiche Lorraine, which contains bacon and onion.
My favourite appetiser was the portobello mushrooms stuffed with cheese and spinach – oh so creamy and rich.
Of course, with the restaurant specialising in dry-aged steak, the brunch’s crown jewel is the 280g Black Angus rib-eye (+$88). Our steak was a bit overcooked, but the peppercorn sauce was perfect. I enjoyed the side of roasted garlic, which gave each meaty bite a slight punch.
The lobster rice ($248 for 2) is a fun dish to share. A play on seafood paella, it comes with mussels and two decent-sized pieces of lobster. The rice was perfectly cooked, and a squeeze of lemon gave a refreshing tang to the seafood. I was stuffed after this...
We had to leave early, so we missed out on dessert – but we advise you not to do the same! To end your set brunch, you have the choice between chocolate “mud” (we’re very curious about this one), homemade waffle with fresh fruits and chocolate sauce and the chef’s dessert of the day.
Not only does Mr & Mrs Fox continue to be a superb happy-hour spot, but I also recommend adding it to your brunch list – it will give you a good reason to venture outside Hong Kong’s Central and Western District bubble. The set menu is delicious, affordable and generous in portion. The fresh new interior is also worth a look-see.
