Pigs Can Fly at The Flying Pig in Sai Ying Pun

Pigs Can Fly at The Flying Pig in Sai Ying Pun

The Flying Pig is one of the newest additions to High Street in Sai Ying Pun and will not disappoint

Next time someone says "when pigs fly", you can point them in the direction of the Flying Pig Bistro Pub in Sai Ying Pun. Nestled in among the other restaurants along High Street in Sai Ying Pun, the Flying Pig features exceptional dishes from roast suckling pork, pulled pork sliders, bangers and mash, and...flying pigs (if you want one).

We had heard about this place from our foodie friends and wanted to try it out. We booked a table for 12 for our friend's surprise birthday party and came prepared with our own pig snouts and ears (we thought this would help us surprise him). The restaurant provided us with a little flying pig balloon.

The decor was tasteful with white and black murals that would rival what you might find in a modern art gallery. Although the lighting was a tad darker than what we're used to, it was perfect to stage a surprise party and would also be an appropriate venue for you and your non-vegetarian date.

What we ate

We ordered three of the classic mini pulled pork sliders ($108) to start and the prime U.S. pork tenderloin ($195), their flying bangers and mash ($148), the barramundi fish and chips ($168) and of course, the suckling pig ($255) for our main dishes. We felt a bit guilty because we ordered the last suckling pig available for the night, but the guilt didn't last long.

The mini pulled pork sliders were great as a starter since they were easy to share and even came with mini European flags stuck in them. The tenderloins were delivered to us next wrapped in bacon. All good things come wrapped in bacon. These were rich and decadent with an exceptional flavour from the truffle gravy even if they were a tad on the dry side.

The bangers had a rich creaminess and caramel finish that was an excellent accompaniment to the mash. The barramundi arrived in a wire frame basket and the portion size was extremely generous - there was enough of the fish and chips for two people to share or for one foodie with a hollow leg. The barramundi's exterior was crispy, while the interior remained tender and delicious. The chips were thick and remained tasty even after they cooled down to room temperature. The salad was seasoned with just the right amount of vinegar.

We loved our Flying Pig dining experience for the fantastic food, attentive service and tasteful interior decoration, and thought the prices were reasonable for the portion sizes and the quality of the food. The stand-out dishes for us were the barramundi fish & chips, suckling pig and prime U.S. pork tenderloin.
