What is it

Pop It has just popped up on Landale Street and we are happy it has. We were walking down Landale Street with our minds set on burgers when we noticed Pop It and decided to step in and try one of their gourmet hot dogs.

The decor is minimal and the inside looked a bit like a well-lit warehouse with a high ceiling and a concrete floor. The staff were very friendly and even offered us happy hour prices for beers (it was not happy hour).

What we ate

We ordered a Texas dog ($88), a dirty dog ($88) and a 'my Antonia' craft beer ($78). The craft beer was deliciously hoppy and perfect to share. While waiting for our food, we noticed the epic spice sauce collection opposite from the cashier. This was fun to browse as there were hot sauces we had never seen or tried before.

23 hot sauces to choose from at Pop It

The Texas dog was topped with slow roasted pulled pork, homemade BBQ sauce & coleslaw and came with fries on the side. We were happy with the portion size of this one and the fries were piled on generously. The pulled pork was tender and went well with the beef dog and cole slaw. We tried it with the ghost pepper sauce on the side, which delivered a slow burning sensation that got worse with time (be careful with that one).

Pop It's Dirty Dog and Texas Dog

The dirty dog and Texas dog

The dirty dog was topped with one piece of bacon, avocado slices, lots of green pepper, onions and a healthy serving of ketchup & mustard. The avocado went well together with the beef dog because of the smooth creamy texture that complimented the beefiness of the dog. We had not tried this combination of flavours before and were happy with the discovery. There were slightly more green peppers than we would have liked, so we took most of these off and ate them on the side.

Although the portion of the fries was large, the hot dog itself was not. If you have a good appetite, you should consider ordering two dogs or getting one with a lot of toppings. Although we enjoyed our meal, at the end of it we were still hungry.

The two dogs we tried were delicious, especially with our choice of hot sauces. We think that Top It would be a good place to drop in for a snack pre or post dinner. When you do, be sure to try one or more of the many hot sauces they have.
