A New Take on Thai-inspired Desserts at Teaspoon Bakery

Designers turned Bakers: We are over-the-moon in love! Recently, we discovered this new, indie bakery in our Foodie neighbourhood of Sheung Wan, and have been swooning over the scrumptious treats ever since! Teaspoon, is founded by Seni and Green, two passionate bakers who met over their love for design. Seni is an interior designer while Green (aptly named) is a landscape architect. They both grew up in Bangkok, and became friends in Hong Kong. Teaspoon was a plan baked (hmm, pun intended!) out of their passion for baking, especially in bringing the small bakery culture to Hong Kong.

A Convergence of Tastes: For Seni, desserts are represented in the classics, such as brownies, chocolate banana cake, and carrot cake. His Ultimate Brownies have been quoted by some as “the best” brownies they’ve ever had. For Green, she loves blending contemporary Thai aesthetics with her baking, and love whipping up tasty treats like Thai milk tea cakes, young coconut cakes and Thai cashew nut coffee bars. Together, they are looking to change Hong Kong’s perception of Thai-inspired desserts, and go beyond the stereotypical mango sticky rice. And although decadent, all their desserts are made with a simple and minimalist approach – with only pure ingredients and no preservatives or artificial products.

“The flavours are inspired by local Thai culture,” says Green. “I once went to Chang Mai and tasted the best young coconut pie I’d ever had. Fresher from what you get in Bangkok. I thought to myself ‘why not try to make this into a cake?’ This twist also worked for my Chiffon cake – I took traditional ingredients and made them new.”
