Getting to Know the Gruel Part III

Getting to Know the Gruel Part III

Brought to you by:   Foodie  Foodie  | over 3 years  ago

Every week in the lead up to the famed MoonTrekker event, we are asking the competing athletes some investigative questions.

Rather than wallow in the knowledge of how unfit we are in comparison to these demi-gods, we concentrate on the little surge of triumph we feel when they divulge their cheat day cravings. Have a read of the tips and flavour favourites from these men and women who have their eating habits down to an art form. In Getting to Know the Gruel Part III, we interviewed Stone Tsang, who is the top Chinese runner ever. Stone is also a trail runner in Champion System Adventure team. “I joined the first year of Moontrekker race and I like the race course so much!”

What does a typical Wednesday night dinner for you look like?

+

Dinner is simple; rice with small amount of meat and vegetable. I do not eat to be super full, but just until the stomach feels comfortable. And I eat at least 3hrs before the race starts.

+

After a massive calorie burn, there must be some desperate craving for something you won’t see on any healthy cooking show… what’s your guilty pleasure?

Usually I like light taste foods and liquid foods. For example soup noodles, mixture of rice, vegetable and meat with soup, and so on.

But sometimes I like to eat curry with rice.

It’s the day of MoonTrekker, the overnight trail marathon, how will you approach nutrition for such a gruelling event.

I use gels and bars for my main nutrition during the race and have sport drink in CP as I can. In addition, keeping drinking water with me at all times on the day of the race is so important, so as to allow the body full hydration.

Obscure food combinations can be quite delightful; do you have any secret weird indulgences you would like to share?

+

Not not really…

It’s your cheat day; you’ve had a great week, where to go and what to eat? Restaurant or home…

Nothing special, I don’t mind eating in a restaurant or at home, but either way will try to eat healthy, with less fatty or deep fried foods.

Share a winning cooking tip that only you (as far as you are away) do?

+

I use less oil when I am cooking and I find it is always better to take off the fat from the meat, such as taking off the chicken skin when cooking.

+

Show us your lunchbox – if you were going on a romantic picnic, what you would you bring?

+

Usually fruits, tomato and egg sandwich, maybe some pasta.
