2015. This is the year. The year that Robert Zemeckis back in 1986 promised us hover boards, self-tying shoes and flying cars and we’ve waited all this time only to discover that we have none of this. Where are our tiny dehydrated pizzas that expand in the re-hydrating oven Pizza Hut?!
We could think of no better place to drown our sorrows over the lack of time machines in our lives than at The Diner on Arbuthnot Road. Only opened seven months ago, The Diner serves an all American menu with a funky 50s setting and it’s certainly the most authentic diner we’ve seen in Hong Kong. We rallied a troop of Foodies and got them down for an evening of Back to The Future trivia while we gorged on a selection of The Diner’s menu.
The Diner’s signature burgers
If you’ve not been to The Diner yet, we suggest you head down and order treats such as their deep-fried mac n’ cheese balls. These little balls of goodness have a gooey cheese centre and will set you up for an all American comfort food session. Think meaty burgers, tangy chipotle chicken wings and indulgent milkshakes. And don’t even get us started on their buttermilk fried chicken. Crunchy, crumbly and full of flavour, the outer crust gave way to juicy pieces of chicken that left us licking our fingers and going for seconds. That with a side of shrimp tostadas and apple slaw absolutely made our night and fuelled our foodies for the special quiz.
Chipotle Chicken Wings
Competition was tight and tensions were high as we tested everyone on their knowledge of Back to the Future and American food and the winning team was awarded with our special Foodie hampers featuring goodies from local startups across Hong Kong. What’s more, everyone went home with a treat sponsored by Appalachian Country Store.
The Diner’s menu has all the classics with a modern twist and we will be back to try their ‘skirt’ burger, a patty with an enormous grilled cheese skirt and the ‘Hippie’ beet and bean burger. We suggest you head down to The Diner early for brunches to avoid the busy weekend crowds.
