Following competitions in cities such as Rome, Chicago, Tokyo and Melbourne, the Gelato World Tour – an amazing competition to select the world's best artisanal gelato flavour – made its latest stop in Shenzhen last weekend. Fifteen of the best gelato makers in China showed off their innovative flavours to the public at OCT Harbour's O'Plaza. Tickets were priced at 60 RMB per person, with proceeds benefiting underprivileged children in China.

All the competitors crafted their gelato on site in the the Carpigiani Gelato Laboratory, with two winners chosen based on a combination of votes from the public and a technical jury of professionals and journalists, including Antonino Sammarco, the head of the Italian Consulate in Guangzhou. And the two flavours that made the tasters' taste buds tingle the most?  “Pure Sensation” by He Qingxia of Fujian (hazelnut gelato made with chocolate-hazelnut cream and crunchy mini puffs) and “Brownies” by Guo Hongwu (an ode to traditional American brownie recipes), also from Fujian. These gelato artisans will be sent to participate in the Gelato World Tour Grand Finale in Rimini, Italy, next year.

Here at Foodie, we’re big fans of gelato. With fewer calories and less fat than ice cream, gelato is made with less air and served at a higher temperature, so its flavours explode on the palate; there’s no freezer burn and it’s more health conscious to boot. Because gelato is normally made daily and in relatively small quantities compared to ice cream, gelato makers often are more creative with their ingredient selections. If you’ve been to Italy, you’ll understand what we’re talking about – gelato shops showcasing so many colourful flavours that it’s often difficult to choose just one. Make ours a triple scoop, please…

Sponsors of the Gelato World Tour include Carpigiani Gelato University, Sigep – Rimini Fiera, the most important trade show for traditional gelato and Italian pastry, and PreGel, the world's largest distributor of ingredients for gelato and pastry.
