Which begs the question: how can Michelin remain independent when its sponsor is the owner of hotels and resorts in Macau?

We’re a little dubious about this one. Melco Crown Entertainment, one of Asia’s leading entertainment resort developers, owners and operators, have just been announced as Michelin Group’s sole official partner across Hong Kong and Macau. In Macau, Melco own and operate Altira Macau, City of Dreams and Studio City, with each boasting top-notch restaurants aplenty.

In the culinary world, winning a Michelin star is the highest accolade possible for a chef and restaurant, but in recent years, many have questioned the fairness of the star rating system and the impartiality of Michelin inspectors. While it’s a definite boon for the Michelin Group to be partnered with such a prominent and successful company as Melco in Hong Kong and Macau, we think this collaboration will also add fuel to Michelin naysayers’ arguments.
