In case you haven't heard of the Hong Kong–grown innovative restaurant group One Star House Party, they travel the world creating locally inspired pop-up restaurants in Airbnbs. Led by James Sharman, the former chef de partie at Copenhagen’s Noma, they are currently on a two-year mission to host pop-ups in 20 different countries before returning to where they began, right here in the 852.
Somehow, in between country-hopping, Sharman found the time to collaborate with W Hong Kong to design the Wed Like a Celeb menu, which he has created to provide bride and grooms with a unique wedding feast that uses creative imaginings of Chinese dishes while incorporating all the necessary elements of a traditional wedding dinner. Sharman even enlisted the help of a friend to be his 'bride' as they went undercover at several establishments around Hong Kong to ensure that even though the menu would take on an imaginative edge, the dishes would remain true to their cultural roots.
Sharman adheres strictly to a locally sourced approach to cooking that matches up with the W’s FUEL philosophy to use the city's local produce in a healthy and modern celebratory menu for a special day.
On the menu are traditional suckling pig with pickled radish and char siu–pickled wolfberries (a powerful antioxidant that can also strengthen your immune system), which not only offsets the fattiness of the pork but also refreshes your palate, a clean and sophisticated take on pan-seared scallops with broccoli purée and crispy lotus root and a deliciously light goose web terrine with red cabbage.
Goose web with cabbage, scallop with broccoli and lotus root and abalone chicken soup are some further highlights on the menu, as are crispy chicken in pumpkin and an iced milk tea dessert with walnut butter and ginger. The final ending comes in the form of handmade hawthorn mochi with sweet red bean cream and smoked salted chocolate served family style.
This union seems a natural one, with One Star House Party reinventing the way people dine out and the W with their uber-cool vibe. Overall it's a pretty hip way to get hitched.
