Where to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo 2017

Did somebody say mayo?

Originally a day to commemorate the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on 5 May 1862, today's Cinco De Mayo is a vibrant international celebration of Mexican people, heritage and culture – in most places, this loosely translates to lively music, colourful parades, a lot of dancing and even more Mexican food.

Get your sombreros on and head to one of these spots around town for this year's fiesta:

Lily & Bloom

Leading the celebrations in Hong Kong is Lily & Bloom, with two parties on 4–5 May. Party right into Cinco de Mayo from 4 May while enjoying authentic tacos and burritos from collaborator Little Burro, in addition to Mexican-inspired culinary creations from Lily & Bloom's own Executive Chef Chris Gare. Get ready for lots of smoke and spice! Rock up early to the party for a complimentary shot of Don Julio Tequila Blanco (first 100 patrons) or gather a group of friends before making a fashionable entrance: late-night table bookings with a minimum spend of $4,000 will receive a bottle of Don Julio on the house. Show off your fancy footwork all night to beats from DJ Reflex.

The party continues on the evening of 5 May with an highly anticipated special guest: Socialito. The restaurant pop-up will bring back everything we loved about HK's trendy discoteca-taqueria – but only for one night. For the ultimate Socialito throwback, get a fix of their iconic tacos, sopas, burritos and other Mexican street food dishes.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo the SoCal way at Commissary with a selection of tacos ($50 each) from Executive Chef Adam Shoebridge, featuring oxtail, pig's head, beef tongue and chicken. A vegetarian taco option is also available, in addition to the restaurant's signature fish tacos and carnitas. Order three tacos or more for free shots of the old Mexican favourite tepache (also known as pineapple beer), a sweet, refreshing fermented pineapple and cinnamon beverage, to wash it all down.

A ticket ($330/person) to Mezcalito's Cinco de Mayo party on 5 May includes 3.5 hours of free-flow margaritas, tequila shots, mezcal cocktails and Mexican food. Joining forces with DJ duo Make Live, resident DJ Ulysses will be dropping Latin and hip hop beats all night long at one of Hong Kong's coolest, most caliente cocktail lounges.

Agave's Cinco de Mayo party on 4 May is perfect for those who are looking to dance the night away. In addition to traditional Mexican snacks and drinks (think tequila and margaritas), the legendary Chris Polanco will be tearing up the stage with his Azucar Latina band to provide a night of live, authentic Latin-American jams. From 9pm onwards, the dance floor will be led by 'Salsa Godfather' DJ Eric (we promise we didn't make this up), offering tunes from reggaeton to salsa.
