BREAKING NEWS: Jumbo Kingdom Closed

Long on the list of tourist spots to hit, Jumbo Kingdom is the world’s largest floating restaurant, requiring a short sampan journey from Aberdeen Promenade to reach it. An iconic Hong Kong landmark (or perhaps a “seamark”, in this case), Jumbo Kingdom featured in several Jackie Chan movies over the years and has welcomed many famous faces, including Queen Elizabeth II, David Bowie, Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chow Yun-fat. It consists of two floating restaurants – Jumbo and the adjacent Tai Pak– with Tai Pak first
opening in 1952 and Jumbo in 1976.

There was some disappointment when the renovations in 2003 didn’t include the renewal of Cafe Deco Group’s Top Deck eatery, a favourite brunching destination for many years.

In January of this year, EJ Insight reported that Jumbo had greatly suffered under the strains of both the recent protests and the novel coronavirus and had been forced to cut half its staff.

Jumbo has now closed with immediate effect, and a final meal amongst staff has taken place. Their website states, “Due to the impact of the current situation, Jumbo Kingdom will suspend its services from March 3rd until further notice.”
