Preface Launches Hong Kong’s 1st ChatGPT-Generated Coffee

ChatGPT is amazing, but it’s also… scary. An artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by US AI research lab OpenAI released last November, it enables human-like conversations with users. After asking the chatbot a question, ChatGPT answers within seconds. It can assist with virtually any task, from solving a tricky math problem, to composing your CV complete with cover letter, to even giving (sound) dating advice. We’ve tried it, and it’s so fast and so accurate – it sends chills down our spine.

But here in Hong Kong, Preface – a tech-training company that uses AI and ML (Machine Learning) to match learners with instructors and personalised course materials – is the first to combine ChatGPT with coffee, launching the 852’s first cup of ChatGPT-generated coffee at their flagship Preface Coffee & Wine shop in Causeway Bay.

How does AI coffee work?

It’s simple. When ordering, you’ll enter your name on a tablet and select a few keywords to describe yourself. ChatGPT will then generate a creative story for you, and Preface’s baristas will recommend a personalised cup of coffee based on this story co-created by you and ChatGPT. Preface will also use your story to generate a uniquely styled image made via AI (which you can share on social media). Every image will be projected in real time onto the shop’s projector screen, forming an AI community artwork. And the AI cycle continues…

AI coffee bonus

Anyone who orders an AI coffee will receive a beverage on the house on their next visit to Preface Coffee & Wine, to be redeemed by 31 May 2023.

Let us know if you try it and what you think!

Where: G/F–5/F, The Sharp, 11 Sharp Street East, Causeway Bay

When: until 21 May 2023 (Monday–Tuesday, 10am–8pm; Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–10pm)
