In light of COVID-19, we encourage diners to take precautions when going out. You can also support your favourite restaurants by getting takeaway and delivery.

Tart, tangy, sweet, creamy, crumbly… all these words describe one of our all-time favourite desserts: cheesecake. Cheesecake comes in many shapes and forms, with many of our favourite restaurants putting their own unique spin on the dessert. We’ve searched the city to find the best cheesecakes around and have found that not all cheesecakes are made equal and that there is truly a cheesecake choice for any mood.

Here are our top cheesecake choices:

The Pop of Colour: Mum’s Not Home

Mums Not Home Cheesecake

One of our all-time favourite hidden hipster cafés, Mum’s Not Home has a simple menu featuring fruit- flavoured cheesecakes and comforting teas and coffees. At this eccentric spot, you can sit alongside a piano (yes, really) or a collection of homemade art and vintage clothing while you sip on a large bowl (yes, bowl) of turmeric tea and choose between rotating flavours of cheesecake. Subject to availability, some of their most popular cheesecake flavours include masala, dragon fruit & purple potato, turmeric, butterfly pea lime and even durian!

Best for: quirky and colourful café vibes

The Classic: The Mandarin Cake Shop

The Mandarin Cake Shop Hong Kong

Sometimes, simple really is best. The Mandarin Cake Shop named this the 1963 Mandarin cheesecake
after the year in which the recipe was perfected. The cheesecake in question is made with sour cream, cream cheese and almond powder. Served with raspberries on top when bought whole and white chocolate slices when ordered by the slice, this creamy cake never fails to satisfy.

Best for: a classy afternoon tea treat

Price/slice: $48 (or $368/lb)

The Lemon: Carbone

Carbone Hong Kong

All the cheesecakes on our list are beautiful in their own way, but this cheesecake might just be our favourite of all. Sadly, it’s also the most expensive of the bunch, meaning it is solely reserved for special occasions. The New York lemon cheesecake at Carbone is unbelievably creamy with a tart citrus finish and is served on an old-fashioned dessert trolley to showcase this gorgeous cake in all its glory.

Best for: ending a celebratory meal (or when life gives you lemons…)

Price/slice: $188

The Basque: 22 Ships

22 Ships Hong Kong

Basque cheesecake is quite literally everywhere at the moment, and while we’ve yet to find one we don’t like, there is one that stands out above the rest. 22 Ships uses a particularly strong, smoky cheese to create a Basque cheesecake that is not very sweet but is deliciously piquant and creamy.

Best for: those who prefer savoury to sweet

Price/slice: $88 (whole 3-inch cheesecake)

The Blue: Rubia

Created by one of our favourite chefs, Edgar Sanuy Barahona, the warm cheesecake with whisky ice cream at Rubia is a must-order. Made with Valdeón blue cheese and served with a bourbon whisky shot, this is definitely not your traditional cheesecake. From its brûléed top to its oozing, slightly savoury filling and the added smokey flavour from the whisky, this creative dessert is a winner.

Best for: something different (and a little alcoholic)

Price/slice: $70

The Sweet Tooth: The Cheesecake Factory

The Cheesecake Factory Hong Kong

The Cheesecake Factory is a popular American chain, first opened in Hong Kong a few years back with the excitement not dying down yet – you’ll still find queues round the block for these crazy cakes as the restaurant does not take reservations. True to its name, The Cheesecake Factory offers an extensive menu of ridiculously decadent cheesecake creations including but not limited to Godiva chocolate cheesecake, Cinnabon cinnamon swirl cheesecake, Oreo dream extreme cheesecake, chocolate chip cookie dough cheesecake and much much more.

Best for: your daily calorie intake (seriously, some cheesecakes rank at around 1,500 calories per slice!)

The Monster: Main St. Deli

Main St. Deli Hong Kong

It’s only natural that a New York-style deli would serve up an epic New York cheesecake. This hefty Main St. Deli cheesecake is not only huge, but it is also incredibly dense. Shared easily between three or four people, this indulgent slice will have you wanting more yet struggling to finish more than a few mouthfuls!

Best for: sharing with friends

Price/slice: $128

The Vanilla: LPM Restaurant & Bar

LPM Restaurant & Bar Hong Kong

LPM Restaurant & Bar, our Foodie Forks 2020 Editors’ Choice Best Restaurant, consistently serves up simple yet exquisite French and Mediterranean fare, and their light-as-air gâteau au fromage blanc is a perfect example of this. Fromage blanc is a creamy and soft French cheese similar to yoghurt, creating a melt-in-the-mouth texture. You’ll also see specks of vanilla dotting the cheesecake, adding a sweet complexity to this dessert, which is served with a side of tart berry compote.

Best for: a lighter option

Price/slice: $118

Shop 1, 1/F, H Queen’s, 23–29 Stanley Street, Central, 2887 1113, book online

The Vegan: VEDA

VEDA Hong Kong Like all the delectable dishes at Foodie Forks 2019 Editors’ Choice Best Green Eats winner VEDA, their signature fig cheesecake is specifically designed for vegetarians. This particular cake takes things a step further by being completely vegan. Made with cashew “cheese” and fresh figs, adorned with flowers and drizzled with homemade caramel sauce, this vegan dessert does not have quite the same texture as its lactose counterparts yet is a deliciously satisfying alternative.

Best for: the vegan and lactose intolerant

Price/slice: $80
