It’s almost a cliché to say Hong Kong is a work hard, play hard city. But it is. After spending long hours in the office, hard-working bodies fill into fantastic bars, restaurants and then sometimes another bar to let loose. Veuve Clicquot aims to be a part of this fun with their new Yellow Hour series, their version of happy hour. Each quarter, they’ll be partnering with select restaurants to offer the combo of a glass of Yellow Label champagne and the restaurants' unique takes on a themed bar snack.
The theme for the first quarter? Popcorn!
We did a little bar-hopping and tried out the combos at five of the 14 participating restaurants. Each offered something truly unique from the others, but all paired well with the champagne.
FoFo by el Willy ($148)
We loved this foie gras bikini with tomato chilli jam, served with popcorn (see photo above). The serving was generous, and the thin wafers sandwiching the rich foie gras were perfection.

La Paloma ($148)
A shot glass was filled with a salmorejo-like soup with white anchovies and popcorn. We found this a bit on the salty side, but fans of strong, savoury foods may enjoy it.

Tazmania Ballroom ($148)
In Taz’s dark and moody space, we tried a light little poppadom roll filled with crab roe salad and popcorn, served on a bed of Cheddar cheese and caramel corn. This was an interesting combination of sweet, savoury, creamy and spicy.

All we can say about these chocolate-covered caramel popcorn balls is that they are some of the gooiest treats we’ve had for awhile. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll love these.

The night ended on a high with a bowl of bacon- and Parmesan-flavoured popcorn. You could really taste the bacon fat throughout. Yummy! This is one of those bar snacks you’ll be wishing came free flow, but alas...

- Metropolitain ($188): banana and popcorn beignets
- Saint-Germain ($206): green tea ice cream and caramelised popcorn
- Shore ($130): spicy chicken popcorn
- Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers – Sky Lounge ($185 per set):
- Savoury set: Ibérico ham croquette, tomato confit with olive oil
- Seafood set: Boston lobster with mango, crispy breaded oyster and roasted scallop
- Sweet set: Assorted macarons, lemon and strawberry meringue tarts and pralines
It’s hard to say no to a glass of champagne and a limited-edition bar snack. After all, it's the little joys in life that make the long weeks pass by that much sweeter.
