The baker

Corina Klein, C-cakes

Demand for Corina’s cakes is such that people will travel across Hong Kong just to get a slice of the action. Based in Discovery Bay, she has long been a favourite for Lantau celebrations, but interest from across the city has picked up, so her culinary delights can now be picked up from the DB ferry pier in Central.

This mother of two delivers cakes that look and taste great but that are still lower in sugar and free of artificial flavourings and additives, making them a top choice for children’s parties.

Corina likes to be creative, so for those who just want to give her a theme, she can brainstorm the best ideas to fit it and then create the perfect cake for it. But she’s also more than happy to follow specific requests about decoration, flavour and dietary restrictions. Her gluten-free options are excellent.

She says, “I’m a baker in blood and bones. I've been baking since I was nine years old, but have done so daily since I became a mother almost 18 years ago. I wanted to give my daughters low-sugar cakes, without any artificial enhancers. Since then, I’ve modified recipe after recipe until I’ve reached the texture and flavour I was looking for. Today, I can proudly say I am working to my own recipes – I am a self-made baker who learned this job the hard way.”

The artist

Abigail Wong, Abigail’s Face and Body Art

It’s incredible the joy that a face-painter can bring to a party, even to adults, but especially to children. Vivacious and enthusiastic, Abigail brings joy by the bucketload. Kids are naturally drawn to her, but once her palette and brushes are out, there is a constant queue to have not only faces painted, but arms, legs and shoulders too. She started out as an art teacher, but has branched out in the past five years and is now an award-winning make-up artist. For kids’ parties she can work to themes such as Batman or Moana, but she also freestyles wonderfully – she simply asks the kids for their favourite colours and works with them to come up with unique designs. She only uses top-quality, FDA-approved face paints that are water based and very easily removed.

In addition to kids’ parties, she regularly works at corporate events and showcases her skills at live body-painting art exhibitions and with live painted statues. Follow her Instagram account to see her incredible designs.

Abigail says, “Face-painting adds a bit of extra fun to a special day. Entertaining each child when they are having their face painted is an important part of making the experience memorable for the little ones.”

The photographer

Eva Thieulle, Eva Portraits

Passionate, inventive and intuitive, Eva Thieulle of Eva Portraits is a wonder with the camera. She has a gift for getting those candid moments and has a special way with children, which means she’s an ideal choice for children’s parties and events. It often seems like little ones are in perpetual motion, so getting those great snapshots of their personalities can be tricky, but Eva manages to do it. Getting a good photographer for a child’s party means that parents don’t have to juggle running the party, keeping guests entertained, fed and watered and capturing all the special moments of the day.

Eva also offers studio portraits, outdoor family shoots, headshots and maternity and newborn shoots. She regularly runs fun special offers for important occasions and makes a big effort to ensure that sessions with her are stress-free, happy occasions. Eva explains, “For me, photography is so much more than an expensive camera or technology and the mechanical pressing of a button. To me, portrait photography is an almost ethereal attempt to capture the essence of a glance, the emotion of an interaction, the ‘look of love’ – all fleeting moments in your life.”
