Having already won critical and public acclaim in just four months since opening, the stylish and sleek contemporary restaurant Mercedes Me in Central is the perfect destination for one of the most innovative Valentine’s menus available in Hong Kong.
Casually saunter past the Mercedes F1 safety car on arrival, which hints at what's to come for the evening; with delicious plates from Culinary Director Malcolm Wood and chef Edgar Sanuy. Settle into the elegant but relaxed seating and peruse the menu and prime the eating tools for a high octane evening.
The green light for dinner is signalled by a foie gras lollipop enveloped in spun sugar cotton candy with crispy raspberries. Melt in your mouth French foie gras is cleverly accentuated by the sweet strands.
Next come everyone’s favourite aphrodisiac; a trio of Kys Oysters from Brittany inspired by different global cuisines. The plump bivalves are served ceviche style from Peru with coriander, mint and lime, from Spain with tomato and habanero oil in a pipette, while mango bring a sweet and unexpected touch to the delicate combination of flavours.
A golden duck egg yolk is the core of the next dish, served with boletus and enoki mushrooms, a veal jus and potato foam in a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of flavours that play off one another.
There are few more popular or decadent ingredients than Hokkaido sea urchin or uni, served here tartare style with fresh tuna, curls of cucumber, sesame toasts, shiso leaves and a sweet, sharp ponzu dressing that brings the whole dish together without ever overwhelming the delicate flavours.
It’s impossible not to like burrata, the fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. It’s the ultimate combination of textures, here cleverly accentuated by the accompanying cherry and tomato and cherry soup, flowers, pink salt and peppercorns. The gently oozing cheese is the counterpoint to the sharp citrus and spice in one mouthful.
Large deep-sea Carabinero prawns from the Mediterranean, deep red in color, are already a symphony of maritime flavor even before the addition of shiro miso, coriander butter and lemon zest take them somewhere even more special.
One of the world’s finest cuts of meat, Iberico Pork Presa is the main event for this very special Valentine’s meal. A black truffle jus, heady and intoxicating with the perfumes of the forest floor, is all that the meat cut from the shoulder needs to truly shine, while an edamame purée provides further textural contrast through smooth and vibrant soybeans.
Rounding off a unique Valentine’s menu comes the Chocolate and Hazalnut delice, a perfectly-plated celebration of the cocoa bean in all its forms that is guaranteed to please. Chocolate brittle with popping candy, candied Italian hazelnuts, a delicate ganache and homemade chocolate ice cream all come together in one unique dish. In tune with the very special day, this dish is love at first sight.
