The word 'breakfast' comes from the long overnight gap between powering up the body, literally ‘breaking the fast’. Nutritionists suggest your body should be fed within two hours of waking to properly fill it up with enough nutrients to effectively start your day. Breakfast replenishes the body’s glucose levels, which is essential in order for the brain to function properly.

A hearty, well-planned breakfast can make all the difference in your daily diet – you’ll be less likely to reach for unhealthy, quick snacks that are the most easily available options throughout the day.

Here are a few five-minute breakfast ideas to inspire you for your next healthy, easy morning meal:

Maple Blueberry Overnight Oats

Easy, chilled, no-cook oatmeal is the perfect beginning to the day. Prepare a few Mason jars Sunday evening and you’ll be all set for the week head. Substitute your favourite fruits to add a little variety.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup uncooked old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup Greek yoghurt
  • 2 tsp maple syrup
  • ½ cup blueberries

Method:

Add oats, milk, yoghurt and maple syrup to a half-pint-sized jar. Secure with a lid, then shake until well mixed. Add blueberries and refrigerate overnight.

Goji Chia Pudding

This little pot of wonder has the texture of dessert – the perfect way to celebrate the start of a new day. Sultanas, apricots or other dried fruits can be substituted to your taste preference or add your favourite nuts for a little crunch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp agave nectar
  • ½ cup dried goji berries, chopped
  • 1 tbsp shredded coconut

Method:

Stir together almond milk, chia seeds and agave in a half-pint-sized jar. Cover and chill overnight. Add goji berries and coconut before serving.

Egg and Avo Pot

It’s so simple, but if you like dining at your desk in the morning, this will feel like an almost decadent way to start your day at the office. Add smoked salmon for an extra indulgence.

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • lemon wedge

Method:

Boil eggs for 4 mins. Cool and peel. Place in half-pint-sized jar with avocado and a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Squeeze the lemon over the avocado before eating.
