Tycoon Tann is a new Chinese eatery at Wellington Street. With three floors of seating, it is private, spacious and offers a modern dining area complete with decorations of different Chinese dynasty's artworks. They focus on Cantonese cuisine with a slight Western-twist offering dim sum, cold bites, hot dishes and a range of innovative drinks.
Starting off, we order two Tycoon Tann platters. The appetiser plate includes wasabi jelly fish, chilled abalone, cucumber salad and pork belly rolls with a significantly strong garlic taste. When comparing the Tycoon Tann platter to the dim sum platter, I would prefer the dim sum platter with its plump shrimp dumplings, delicate scallop shao mai, abalone tart and indulgently cheesy and crispy crabmeat spring rolls.
The must order dish is the charcoal grilled char siu, which is perfectly smoked, tender and moist, made using Hungarian Mangalica hogs with a honey sweet glaze to finish it off. It is specially served over a hot flame to keep its temperature.
Also, the baked crab shell is brilliantly made with a generous amount of fresh crab meat in addition to its unbeatable cheese topping.
A feast for the eyes would probably have to be the enormous sesame ball. They fry it to a crisp golden brown, and prepare it hollow to satisfy both the camera and our sweet appetites.
