Chef Alex Fargas introduces new dishes to the time-tested contemporary Spanish restaurant Fofo by el Willy

For a restaurant to stay open for three years is quite an achievement in Hong Kong, so the mere fact that FoFo by el Willy is celebrating its sixth birthday is a testament to its fine contemporary Spanish food. Coupled with a bright atmosphere and prime location, FoFo has certainly established a strong presence in Hong Kong's dining scene. Focusing on fresh, quality ingredients, Chef Alex Fargas has added a handful of new dishes to the a la carte menu that is equally unique in presentation and bold in flavour.

To start we tried the Lobster & Seafood Salad Taco (HK$48 per piece), which had a generous portion of lobster inside. I especially liked the contrast in texture between the crispy shrimp cracker and the lobster and seafood salad. For HK$48 per piece, it is a bit pricey, but worth it if you're willing to splurge.

We were very intrigued by the Cuttlefish Tagliatelle with lobster, piquillos, sea urchin (HK$198), as we're accustomed to tagliatelle being made out of flour and eggs, not seafood! This dish had a bouncy texture and was milder on the fish flavour than I was expecting; the soupy base is perfect for the cooler weather.

The Grilled Octopus, potato, aji amarillo with white asparagus & padron peppers (HK$135) is a good sharing plate with a focus on varying textures; chewy octopus, smooth potato, crunchy asparagus, and crispy bread thins.

A clear winner for favourite main of the evening was the Australian Wagyu Rib Eye with padron peppers, baby carrots and wild mushroom (HK$578) with black truffles to finish. You could have literally cut the wagyu with a butter knife, it was so tender. Combined with the seasonal truffles, this dish both tasted and smelled divine.

Our dinner finished off on a high note with two beautifully presented new desserts. The White Chocolate & Yogurt Layers with mixed berries sorbet (HK$78) was the crowd favourite; light layered yogurt and white chocolate accentuated with the bold taste of mixed berries. The varying textures of this dish - creamy yogurt and hard chocolate - were also a nice surprise. The flavours of the Mojito 2015 Lemon Rum Cake with mint ganache & lemon sorbet (HK$88) worked well together, and though I enjoyed eating it (as I do all sweet dishes), it wasn't quite as memorable as the previous dessert.


FoFo by el Willy has stood the test of time in the wild wild west of Hong Kong's foodie scene, meaning you know you're going to be treated to good service and quality food in a lovely setting. The all-white dining area makes for a perfect date-night and the rooftop is a great place for a few casual drinks after work. The thorough menu covers just about any Spanish dish you may be craving, so there really is something for everyone at FoFo.
