Juice cleanses are seen as a trendy way to weight-loss. This has been a point of contention for a number of years, but recent studies from University of Southern California researchers suggests that a periodic diet mimicking fasting (which is what a juice cleanse entails) achieves the following (note: FM stands for mimicked fasting in this instance):

  • FMD rejuvenates the immune system and reduces cancer incidence
  • FMD promotes hippocampal neurogenesis and improves cognitive performance
  • FMD causes beneficial changes in risk factors of age-related diseases in humans
  • FMD promotes stress resistance

Even Beyonce is into it

Juice cleanses hop aboard the periodic fasting methodology and allows your body time to ‘reboot’. It is also a great way to jumpstart a diet, as it not only helps control appetite and cravings, but is naturally lower in calories, while supplying the body with probably more concentrated beneficial energising and healing nutrients than it has seen before.

Let’s touch on what makes Bless Juice different from other juice cleanses I have tried in the city:

Firstly, the delivery of the juice in the morning is easily the best I’ve experienced. They ask the best time to drop off your batch and deliver within half an hour of the requested time. For me, this meant before work before 9am, and twice I had a lovely individual drop off freshly pressed juices to my apartment. Two go in the fridge for dinner and two come along for a ride to the office.

Secondly, the first juice of the day was not of lemon/cayenne/other citrus and spicy things variety, but a simple green juice, which was nice. Though we certainly validate the benefits of lemon water in the morning, those who are begin juice cleanses usually are in the habit of lemon watering anyway and need not a juice dedicated to the practise.

Thirdly, there was no take on gazpacho as the ‘savoury’ juice, which was altogether welcomed. Any other friends who cannot stomach the cold Spanish soup after drinking it for three days straight can we hear an amen? Instead, all of Bless’s juices are very balanced with both vegetables and fruit, and none of them are overly sweet. There are certainly more savoury juices in the mix, our favourite being the eclectic cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, granny smith and parsley combination.

Fourthly, the juices are all 100% raw and unpasteurised which preserves nutrients and living enzymes from fresh fruit and vegetables. Pressed juices are extracted in the most natural way possible, whereas traditional juicers, those that are centrifugal models, use fast-spinning blades and rip fruit and veg apart. This process adds some heat and exposes ingredients to air, two things that cut down on how many nutrients ultimately find their way in to our bodies.

Many people struggle with trying to reduce calories on a daily basis, so the idea of indulging in favourite foods most of the time and “rebooting” with a few days of diligence is appealing. It is important to not look at cleansing as just a reboot, however, but as the first steps to improved eating choices and a way of recalibrating the system on an ongoing basis.

Yes, but is it edible? [digital editor]
