It’s the dreaded rainy season in Hong Kong, and that means the kids here all have cabin fever from being cooped up indoors. What to do over the weekend when there’s no school, just week after week of grey skies and torrential rain?

A weekend brunch with the family and a magic show might just drive away the gloom. Picada offers a brunch menu with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. There are lighter bites of tomato soup and Latin Caesar salad tossed in chipotle dressing, colourful, crunchy empanadas filled with either chicken, beef or mushroom and an assortment of heartier dishes ranging from ceviche, to crispy chicken bites, to organic quinoa salad.

Mains range from rotisserie chicken, to grilled fish, to vegetable paella. There’s also a rib-eye topped with a sunny-side-up egg for those looking for a little extra protein.

There’s plenty to keep the little ones entertained, and each table comes stocked with colouring books and crayons. The kids’ menu is filled with time-tested favourites, from mac ‘n’ cheese, to mini sliders, to fish and chips. Churros with sprinkles add to the fun.

The best part of the brunch, however, is the phenomenal magic show. We initially rolled our eyes and cast off the magician as simply kids entertainment… until our entire table of eight adults was mesmerised by the incredible card tricks of Jose Almenares of Amazing Magic. Aside from the various card tricks performed at each table, Jose wows with a 15-minute performance that had all of us scratching our heads and exclaiming, “How does he do it?!” Spoiler alert: there is a real bunny involved!

Our suggestion is to not focus too much on the food but instead on the fun family environment at the brunch. The magic show is truly one of the top live performances of the sort we’ve seen in Hong Kong, and you might just find yourself being even more entertained than the little ones! Plus, there’s free flow on offer to keep the mood jovial.

The five-course brunch is priced at $298 per person, with an additional $198 for a three-hour free-flow package that includes wine, beer, margaritas, mojitos and Prosecco. The kids’ menu is priced at $98.
