It seems like just the other day that we attended The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 awards ceremony, which took place for the first time in Asia at a lavish event in Singapore. Sadly, there will be no awards ceremony this year. In fact, there will be no World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2020 list at all.
The awards ceremony, which was set to take place in Antwerp, Belgium, on 2 June, along with the announcement of the ranked fine-dining establishments, has been postponed until 2021. In a press release issued yesterday, the organisation announced their bid to support the industry “in light of the horrific toll that the pandemic is taking on the restaurant and hospitality sectors worldwide, not to mention the suffering of millions of individuals at the hands of the virus”.
William Drew, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, stated, “Given the circumstances globally, in 2020 we will put all our efforts into helping the restaurant sector to fight for its future, as well as assisting in the work that chefs and restaurateurs are themselves doing to help others.”
While the organisation is yet to announce the details of their “meaningful initiatives that will bolster the restaurant sector,” we admire their sentiment and know that all of those in the industry will be striving for a better 2021.
This news comes less than a week after Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2020 released its list during a virtual awards ceremony.
The World’s 50 Best is asking restaurants to complete a short survey about the current situation in their region. They’re also asking to be informed of any initiatives that are available to support restaurant workers around the world.
