You might not be aware that many of your favourite restaurants and bars in Hong Kong are truly independent. Many are owned by the very chefs who run them, who’ve all painstakingly gone through hell to build these labours of love.
Unfortunately, the restaurant business is a tough one, and with the current social-distancing guidelines, it’s no wonder that many places are suffering. They still have to pay rent and care for their staff, all while their capacity is cut down by more than 50 per cent. Unlike big groups, independent restaurants don’t have investors who can throw them a rope.
So in this critical time, several independent restaurants are offering takeaway and delivery for the first time. Let’s give them a hand through this crisis like they’ve fed us so well for so long.
Below is a list of some independent restaurants doing takeaway and delivery right now. There are more places that aren’t on this list, so if you know who they are – please support them.
BEDU & Uma Nota
The fantastic duo of BEDU and Uma Nota are now offering the best of each of their lunch and dinner menus for takeaway and delivery. BEDU is available from Thursday, 9 April on Deliveroo and Uma Nota is available from the 9th on foodpanda. They will deliver free of charge to Sheung Wan, Central and Mid-Levels beginning Monday, 13 April. Alternatively, you can also pick up yourself at one of their locations.

Brut!
The creative minds at Brut! are open for brunch and dinner with a beautiful takeaway menu available throughout the day and into the night. Their sandos are to die for! Dine in with them or pick up, and on a case-by-case basis, they will deliver in the neighbourhood as long as the team can manage it. They also have red, white, pink and orange wines that are priced at $350 each for takeaway or delivery.

Fineprint
Fineprint coffee shop – named Foodie Forks 2019 Best Café – is offering home delivery. Customers can phone up their SoHo shop and they will deliver any of their menu items within SoHo for free. They are also on Deliveroo. Additionally, they’ve created some hampers filled with goodies like sourdough loaves, avocados and tea that are also available for delivery.

La Cabane
La Cabane’s bistro is doing takeaway and delivery for both lunch and dinner. They’re offering combos and menus for two and four people, with a short drink list and a full wine list available at 30% off on 750ml bottles. They’ll deliver in and around Central, Sheung Wan and the lower Mid-Levels, and they’re on Deliveroo. Oh, and they have cheese to go.

MOYO
MOYO is serving Korean food mainly through delivery and takeaway for both lunch and dinner. They’re on Deliveroo and also take delivery orders by phone. Additionally, they’re including a free Peroni beer for every $100 spent.

Nhậu
Chef Que Vinh Dang’s modern Vietnamese neighbourhood restaurant Nhậu offers takeaway and delivery for both lunch and dinner. The talented chef is also flogging his homemade sriracha ($100/240ml bottle), which is spicier and smokier than most other versions we’ve tried – it’s great drizzled on just about anything.

Okra Kitchen
Casual izakaya Okra Kitchen is offering their full menu to go. New orders can be sent to them at any time but will only start being delivered after 6pm, and they will be on Deliveroo soon. For takeaway orders above $500, Okra will also give out a small bottle or cup-sized sake on the house.

Pondi
Indian-French gem Pondi is open for brunch and dinner with a beautiful takeaway menu available throughout the day and into the night. Continental thali boxes are available for brunch takeaway, with the full menu available for dinner. Wines, beers and sherries to go are discounted.

Sake Central
Sake Central is open for takeaway and delivery during their usual business hours, serving up sandos and a full selection of sake, shochu, Japanese whisky, craft beer and artisanal soft drinks. Sake Central will personally deliver to you, but they’re also on Deliveroo.

Shady Acres
Beloved wine bar and eatery Shady Acres is open daily for dine-in, takeaway and delivery for wines, cocktails, spirits and food. They’re not currently on an online ordering platform, but the team delivers all orders themselves on foot and by bicycle in the nearby SoHo neighbourhood. Customers can also order in person curbside.

The SOHOFAMA group out of PMQ known for their organic bites and dishes is doing takeaway and delivery. SOHOFAMA is offering set lunches for $108, while Locofama and SUPAFOOD are doing their usual delicious and healthy fare. SOHOFAMA and SUPAFOOD are on both Deliveroo and foodpanda, while Locofama is only on foodpanda.
