Stanley is a bit hit-and-miss for me when I think of good food, drink and entertainment. However, that has changed now. Nestled away just off Stanley Market is Bubbles & Wines, a cosy and chilled wine joint. It has a warm atmosphere and a living-room-esque feel, where time flies by listening to the lounge jazz in the background.
This is the first venture for Dutchman Evan Horsman, a restaurateur/sommelier with over 20 years’ experience throughout Europe and Southeast Asia. His passion shines through and is a main reason Bubbles & Wines is fast becoming a regular spot for the community.
Bubbles & Wines has a great selection of more than 90 wines, served by the glass and bottle. There are a few crowd favourites available, so be adventurous and try one of the recommendations.
We savoured a few Genoels-Elderen Chardonnay Blauw 2015 ($90/glass), a Belgian wine that was new to me. I’m no expert on wine, but I know what I like and this was a winner.
The food on offer is high quality, a mixture of Italian cold cuts, European cheeses and plant-based sourdough rye bread made from an ancient Latvian recipe – yes, I had to Google that one too.
Charcuterie for two ($220) includes four kinds of cold cuts along with imported burrata and salad
Bubbles & Wines’ outstanding cheese selection ($190 for 3 or $350 for 6)
This dish drew the attention of a couple of women opposite. Obviously, they were keen to get a picture for the ‘gram (and because of food envy). I’d never had feta cheese on a hot dog before, and its tangy taste complemented the meat. That said, this dog was slightly overdressed for the occassion.
Verdict
Bubbles & Wines is definitely a spot for the “mature” crowd, either to catch up or to celebrate a special occasion (there was a birthday on our visit). A much-needed addition to Stanley, this will not stay a hidden gem for long.
