For the longest time, I thought DOUBLESHOT by CUPPING ROOM was just another coffee shop that also sold some alcoholic beverages. I don’t drink coffee, so it was never on my radar as a place to check out.
The venue is centrally located in the middle of Hollywood Road, a perfect spot to people-watch out of the first-floor windows. I visited on a Friday afternoon, and the ambience was very lively.
At the time of my visit, Chef Jaime Ortolá was heading the kitchen, though he has since moved on to Fireside. However, I’m glad to say that the items I tried are still available on the menu, so get on over and pig out.
The MF potatoes ($88) are batons of thin potato sheets, fried until crisp, served with a spicy tomato-based sauce and house-made aioli. Basically, these are thick chips in my book – nothing complicated, but a decent starter.
The burrata garlic prawns ($148) are as tasty as hell, featuring tiger prawns, chilli, creamy burrata and crunchy croutons. Each mouthful was better than the last, and I could have done with an extra portion of this. I was left with no choice but to mop up the sauce with some bread – simply delicious.
The suckling pig lettuce cups ($178) are garnished with pickled daikon and carrot, Vietnamese-style dressing and spicy peanuts. The meat was juicy and flavourful, however, the skin didn’t have enough crackling for my liking. That said, this was my only issue with the dish.
For a casual meet-up, DOUBLESHOT is a great choice, located centrally and serving up interesting and tasty food.
