Celebrating pleasure and and indulgence, Bacchus has turned one! Named after the Greek god of wine and harvest, this upscale French restaurant is marking its first anniversary with a new three-course dinner menu (HK$888/person) by French chef Mickael Messina. The menu offers an array of delectable plates made using imported ingredients. Of course, wine has to be the choice for dinner, and there are more than 800 good-value bottles sourced mainly from Burgundy from which to choose.

Right in the heart of French expat neighborhood Tai Ping Shan, Bacchus feels like a hidden gem. The terrace is spacious and has a a garden feel.

The new menu has a huge selection of dishes, but the upgrades in particular are worth it. The Cigar (+HK$88) is one I’m happy to have chosen to start – it’s torched, smoked Wagyu beef tartare wrapped around a crispy cracker sheet, topped with Kristal caviar. Savoury and luxurious, with a touch of citrus and sweetness to the Wagyu, this is a great way to whet the appetite.

The duck main course is cooked medium rare, with the meat peeling right off the bone. A splattered beetroot purée with orange pollen sauce brightens this classic, hearty French dish.

Now on to the second main – a must-order at Bacchus, especially for group dining – the 12 days dry-aged chicken (+HK$988). This tender chicken is given an East-meets-West twist with a touch of Sichuan peppercorn in the glaze, providing a mild kick. The roast chicken itself is kept traditional using lemon, garlic, thyme and rosemary.

I opted for the classic crêpes Suzette (+HK$38) for dessert – these soft, slightly dense pancakes are caramelised with sugar and orange zest, before being flambéed with Grand Marnier. A sugary syrup coats each crêpe, with a hint of orange in each bite.


This new dinner menu presents a variety of mouth-watering fine-dining French choices. I especially recommend Bacchus for a celebration, date night or dinner with clients; the food is deliciously well executed, and the restaurant offers prestigious, rare French wine at competitive prices. I envision the terrace being booked up as the weather gets cooler, making this a hidden gem for sharing a glass of top-notch wine in a sophisticated yet relaxed setting.
