The Tsingtao or Harbin beer is flowing, plates swinging out of the kitchen and landing with heavy steam on tables, and the music is blasting – Tung Po may be the loudest and brightest dai pai dong in Hong Kong, but it delivers an experience no one else can.
The 32-year-old dai pai dong first found its footing in the Java Road Cooked Food Centre, and later cemented its stature as a venue prized for experiencing a frenetic party atmosphere, curated by owner Robby Cheung.
The restaurant closed in September 2022, due to licensing issues, before reopening in late November 2022 in Wan Chai, still harnessing the great atmosphere curated over decades. Waiters pour you steady bowls of beer (yes, beer is drunk in bowls) whilst food comes fresh out of the kitchen sizzling with spice.
Dishes popular at Tung Po include the “wind sand” chicken, sauteed pork intestines, green beans with red pepper and garlic, deep fried shrimp with garlic, and sauteed crab with black bean sauce.
A Tung Po experience is best enjoyed with a large group of friends and many bottles of beer. The rowdy restaurant unites music, beer, karaoke, food, and the energy of Robby to make it an unforgettable night.
