New restaurants in Hong Kong: August 2026

1. TANAKA

Chef Satoru Tanaka, aka Boss, is the man to thank for TANAKA, a Japanese steakhouse extraordinaire. Chef Satoru has quite the pedigree, having been schooled in the art of butchery from the age of 10, opening his first restaurant at just 25 years old, and since expanding from his flagship in Tokyo to 20 meat-focused restaurants throughout Japan. At his flashy Hong Kong outpost with just eight coveted seats, the chef offers a Wagyu omakase like no other that’s priced at HKD3,500 per person. The menu places rare Matsusaka beef, sourced exclusively from virgin female Japanese black cattle, on a pedestal; many connoisseurs consider this costly beef to be the best of the best of Japanese Wagyu, taking “melt in the mouth” to another level.

2. Taekwang Steel

We move from Japan to Korea with another carnivorous concept, Taekwang Steel, that differs from the KBBQ norm by specialising in on-the-spot straw-smoking rather than meat marination. You can sit back and relax at this spacious, trendy spot whilst the staff do all the grilling for you, whether it be the smoked pork jowl (HKD198) or smoked beef short rib (HKD548). For classic Korean flavours to complement all that smoky meatiness, the aged kimchi and pork stew (HKD98) and volcano steamed egg (HKD98) come highly recommended.

The YOHO MALL location seats nearly 100 customers in an expansive indoor dining area and outdoor terrace. On the menu are tried-and-true Pici favourites, including the burrata (HKD98) and homemade meatballs (HKD138) to start and pasta bestsellers of orecchiette ‘nduja (HKD138), lasagna classica (HKD130), and pappardelle beef cheek (HKD150). For dessert, Pici’s tiramisu (HKD60) has long reigned supreme in the city.

Rapidly expanding steakhouse chain Flat Iron Steak’s newest Hong Kong shop has opened in Quarry Bay. Flat Iron’s affordably delicious signature Australian Angus cuts, such as the flat iron (HKD168/HKD238) and gaucho steak (HKD168/HKD238), are on board here as usual, but what makes this branch even more exciting is the dual debut of the brand’s first-ever bakery concept. Flat Iron Bakery is modelled after the bake shops of London, baking up bites ranging from the Wagyu sausage roll (HKD55) to the viral dot cake (HKD48) that’s taking Instagram by storm.

5. Ponentino

Ponentino The best new restaurants to try in Hong Kong August 2026

Italian restaurant Ponentino is the F&B star of new luxury hotel The Royal Garden Kowloon East in Tseung Kwan O, which opened earlier this year. The rooftop eatery – housed all the way up on the 47th floor with an atmospheric outdoor terrace to boot – has been inspired by long-standing sister restaurant Sabatini at The Royal Garden hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. Elevated regional Italian classics are at the heart of Ponentino’s menus, with the tasting menu (HKD528 pp for lunch; HKD788 pp for dinner) a top choice in order to savour the breadth of the restaurant’s offerings. Ponentino’s AI-powered cocktail experience is another highlight, tasking guests to complete a personality test leading to a machine-crafted bespoke cocktail.

With divergent branches from our own Tin Hau to Paris, Saigon Etoile has recently launched a second location in Hong Kong, this time in Soho. The restaurant offers typical Vietnamese street-food fare that includes bowls of phở (HKD98) and bún riêu (HKD98) soup noodles, bún chả (HKD98) cold rice vermicelli salad, and bánh mì (from HKD78) sandwiches. The flavours here are spot on and the prices affordable, making Saigon Etoile an ideal spot for a quick but delicious meal in the ‘hood.

Bagel specialist Schragels has expanded to Kowloon for the first time with its largest location to date, a two-storey space in Tsim Sha Tsui with a floor dedicated to hosting workshops and events. Baked fresh daily, a bagel and schmear here costs HKD60, or you can order up a loaded bagel sandwich (from HKD95) if you’re craving something heartier. The new shop has enlarged its all-day menu to feature a wide assortment of Jewish and New York deli classics like matzo ball soup (HKD95), patty melt (HKD165), and that bodega sweet staple, the black & white cookie (HKD50).

A stalwart of both the Indian and vegetarian dining scenes in Hong Kong, Sangeetha now has a Hong Kong Island counterpart to its long-time outlet in Tsim Sha Tsui. Judging by its soft-opening queues, Central diners are clamouring for a taste of the Chennai-founded chain’s stellar North and South Indian recipes. The paper-thin dosas are a must-order, particularly the masala dosa (HKD90) stuffed with a spiced potato mixture, as are the idly (HKD55) and vada (HKD55).

Possibly the first self-described Nepalese speakeasy in the city, Niwas serves up a menu of traditional eats from Nepal alongside its easy-drinking cocktails mixed with ingredients from that nation. At this chilled, modern bar and restaurant, the momos (HKD78) are some of the juiciest in town and the dried buffalo meat sukuti (HKD98), chowmin (HKD78) stir-fried noodles, and sargemba (HKD108) blood sausage are as flavoursome as can be.

Sometimes a café is more than a café, and Cleo’s is just that, straddling the bistro border in Sheung Wan with cosy table service and a menu going beyond standard coffee and brunch plates. A partnership between the purveyor of the best focaccia sandwiches in town, nearby PASSIONE, and popular Sai Ying Pun café Rootdown, Cleo’s food menu ranges from sarnie greats of oxtail grilled cheese (HKD98) and tuna melt (HKD88), to a killer snack plate (HKD128) that’s got all your protein needs covered with tinned fish, chorizo, garlic labneh, and soft-boiled egg, to polished bites of leek and potato soup (HKD68) and salt-cured seasonal fish (HKD238). On the sweet side, we can vouch for the French toast (HKD118), which tastes as dreamy as it looks.

11. Chin Teng

We have high hopes for Chin Teng, an offshoot of beloved noodle shop Chin Jor Fan Tong in Tai Hang. This new Wan Chai eatery, clean and comfortable, once again headlines Chinese noodle soups. The customisable braised beef noodle soup (HKD98) has been a hit from the get-go for its rich broth and generous toppings. You can pair your noods with a dish or two from Chin Teng’s short-but-sweet list of sides; we love the sound of the spiced crispy bean curd with sweet and sour Thai sauce (HKD48).

12. YuSang

YuSang The best new restaurants to try in Hong Kong August 2026

From mid-August, contemporary Korean spot YuSang is set to explore the unique relationship between anju, Korean food that is traditionally coupled with drinks, and sool, the country’s wide variety of alcoholic beverages, zeroing in on soju, makgeolli, and fruit wine in particular. YuSang’s food menu, developed with sharing in mind, runs the full Korean gamut, spanning raw and chilled plates, fried dishes, soups and stews, rice recipes, and charcoal-grilled meats – the idea is to make a selection with your tipple of choice in mind.

13. Canto Jade

Those looking for fine Cantonese cuisine in Quarry Bay would do well to consider Canto Jade, a new Cityplaza restaurant with an elegant design inspired by the Song Dynasty. Cart-service dim sum is a focal point of the eatery, with the Eight Delights Dim Sum Birdcage (HKD238 for 2) a leading offering. Six signature main dishes include the crispy chicken with scallion oil and mushroom sauce (HKD208) and flambéed char siu (HKD168). Another standout is the “Canto Sweet” takeaway corner serving up traditional Cantonese desserts, coffee, and tea.
