001 has been around in Hong Kong for a while but its elusive demure does not diminish with time. Hidden behind a black door between two market stalls, the only clue to finding the underground speakeasy is its signature doorbell. Buzz once and wait for the hostess to lead you in.
The sophistication continues as you enter and let your eyes feast on the decor: a gentlemen’s club crossover with vintage library style. The 30 or so seats are sparsely scattered over the floor space, consisting of plush velvet armchairs and secluded booths (with curtains attached). As opposed to shrill music blasting through most of LKF, soft jazz flows through the lounge as you slowly sip your drink.
001 is a bar that takes its whisky seriously, containing a wide selection of whisky where other bars cannot compare. On the other hand, their infamous grilled gruyere cheese sandwich paired with tomato soup ($98) could not be missed. Buttered toast coupled with the lightly salted and creamy cheese is a midnight snack which even ladies could not resist.

It goes without saying 001 is the place to be if you are ready to spill some secrets or a quiet place to have meaningful conversation with some close friends. The privacy accompanied by butler-style service is another aspect which attracts one for a revisit. But I would recommend you to make reservations well in advance, if you don’t want to get a sooty nose in front of your date (or even your boss).
