The best fish & chips in Hong Kong
1. Hooked

Folks residing in Mid-Levels are lucky to have Hooked at their doorstep. This chippie refers to itself as “Kiwi style,” and its sustainable fish hails from New Zealand waters. The batter here is crisp and light, fried in Australian sunflower oil, and you can taste the difference. Hooked serves up battered hoki (HKD55) and breadcrumbed blue cod (HKD90/HKD120), and both are fried to order and absolutely delicious. On a different British note, Hooked’s meat pies (HKD60) – steak, steak and kidney, and chicken and mushroom – are the real deal. Cash or PayMe only.
Hooked, G/F, 80–88 Caine Road, Mid-Levels, Central, 2915 1118
2. Fish Bar

In mid-2024. JW Marriott Hong Kong unveiled its refreshed Fish Bar concept, long a popular outdoor restaurant for leisurely lunches and romantic dinners sat poolside. One all-time favourite dish that has remained on the menu is the sustainable Oasis giant grouper fish & chips (HKD320) – the priciest contender on our list, but worth it. The grouper, sourced from a regulated local fishery in Lau Fau Shan, is coated in a beer batter before deep-frying, making it ultra crispy. It’s served with the classic accoutrements of smashed peas, chunky chips, and tangy tartar sauce for dipping.

3. The Chippy

Situated by the seaside, we encourage you to journey to Discovery Bay for a taste of The Chippy’s sublime cod & chips (HKD158/HKD198), an experience as Blighty-authentic as it gets. There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating at this family-run pub for relishing a whole host of traditional chip-shop faves, including the scampi & chips (HKD178), battered sausage (HKD50), and cone of chips (HKD48/HKD58) with a side of curry sauce (HKD38/HKD50). You can even satisfy your British bevvy cravings with the likes of Vimto (HKD58), Lilt (HKD58), and Irn-Bru (HKD58) up for sipping. There’s a chip butty (HKD70) on the menu too!

4. White Beard

White Beard is popular on Peel Street for its cosy, tucked-away vibe. We adore this spot’s flaky, crispy signature fish & chips (HKD128). Uniquely for a chippie, in addition to the standard local craft beer by Young Master Brewery, White Beard offers classic cocktails, spritzes and sours, shooters, natural wine, and more on the beverage side.

5. Delaney’s

Delaney’s is an Irish pub chain in two divergent locations – Cyberport and Tsim Sha Tsui – with a comfortable ambience that truly feels like you’re stepping back in time in the UK. An ideal place for a pint or to watch all the best of British, Australian, and New Zealand live sport, Delaney’s also dishes out a cracking selection of pub classics, with the generous portion of fish & chips (HKD192) at the top of that list. The beer batter here is light yet crisp and sturdy, and there’s plenty of malt vinegar at the ready too.

6. The Globe

There are many reasons to frequent Soho gastropub The Globe: its relaxed, homey vibe, its impressive beer range, and its food menus showcasing honest British fare. After a Scotch egg (HKD120) starter, an order of beer-battered Atlantic haddock (HKD195) is a must, a flavourful piece of golden fish accompanied by crushed minted peas, chips, and curry sauce. Follow that up with the banoffee pie (HKD95) of your dreams and Bob’s your uncle.

7. The Captain’s (AIRSIDE)

Whilst the newer Causeway Bay and Central branches of The Captain’s have gone viral for their funky egg waffles, it’s the original AIRSIDE outlet that is more well known for its fish & chips (the egg waffles are also available here). Without a hint of oil upon serving, The Captain’s fish & chips (HKD88/HKD128) is hearty, salty, and well fried, coming with homemade tartar sauce. Instead of chips, you can opt for your battered fish to arrive with a serving of one of the eatery’s creative pasta dishes, perhaps the mentaiko white spaghetti (HKD118).

8. Staunton’s

Staunton’s has been a Soho stalwart dating back to 1997, a boozer favoured by British expats for its friendly, rowdy vibe. Like any British pub worth its salt, this spot’s fish & chips (HKD168) is bona fide. As for the sides of minted mushy peas and tartar sauce, they’re spot on too, guv’nor. If you’re not feeling quite so hungry, you can order the mini fish & chips (HKD118) instead.

9. Cafe Whale

Make sure to bring cash or an Octopus card to this popular Sai Wan Ho spot, Cafe Whale, or you won’t get very far. What sets this eatery’s fish & chips (from HKD113) apart is the variety of deep-fried fish on offer, including cobia, grouper, and eel. Our pick goes to the deep-fried ma yau (HKD128), otherwise known as fourfinger threadfin, a local favourite here accented with homemade chicken oil and Chinese wine for a delightful Hong Kong touch. Sticking to the seafood theme, order the signature fish soup (HKD25) on the side.

10. Fish & Chick

Now with three shops in Hong Kong, dual-concept Fish & Chick is one to hit up if you find yourself either in western Hong Kong Island or Tseung Kwan O. Regulars rave about the fresh-as-can-be locally sourced sea bass (+HKD30) and sea bream (+HKD30) used to prepare the delightfully crunchy beer-battered fish & chips that come as part of a well-priced all-day set (HKD98) alongside a starter and drink. If you’re dining with someone who prefers chook, the chain’s juicy half roasted chicken (HKD108) is the way to go.
