This year, one of the trusted benchmarks for gourmet dining, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, is dancing to a new tune. In the hopes of becoming more diverse and inclusive, director Hélène Pietrini has announced a 50/50 gender split amongst its 1,040 voting members spread across the globe.

A new category humbly termed Best of the Best will be the resting place of all restaurants who’ve previously topped the list in its 17-year history. This means that no restaurant that’s earned the title of best restaurant in the world will be eligible for being voted into the same category twice.

As put by Daniel Humm, chef and co-owner of Eleven Madison Park in New York, which was named best restaurant in 2017, “With these changes, we’ll see a broader field of restaurants and chefs step onto the international stage, and it’s humbling to be able to contribute to that transformation. Food is all about community, and expanding, that will only strengthen our impact.”

Later this year, there will be a new platform added to 50 Best that maps the world of food and beverage as nominated by the 50 Best voters.
