One of the city’s longest-standing five-star hotels, InterContinental Hong Kong will shut its doors on 20 April in order to undertake a major refurbishment of all its guest rooms and suites, public areas, restaurants and event venues, as well as refreshing the building’s facade. It will reopen in 2022 as the rebranded Regent Hong Kong.
With this rebranding, the hotel will return to its roots, having first opened as Regent Hong Kong in 1980. It was owned by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) up until 2015 and has operated under the InterContinental brand since 2001.
Yan Toh Heen, the hotel’s Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, will remain open throughout the period,
accessed via K11 MUSEA, but we’ll have to wait a few years until we once again savour InterContinental’s full portfolio of restaurants including NOBU, THE STEAK HOUSE winebar + grill and Harbourside.
The hotel’s fine-dining French seafood restaurant Rech by Alain Ducasse closed unexpectedly earlier this year.
For those, like us, worrying about what will become of the InterContinental’s current employees during the
two-year refurbishment period, the hotel has stated, “InterContinental Hong Kong colleagues will be supported with opportunities, wherever possible, within IHG properties after the hotel closes. They will also be given priority to rejoin the hotel when it reopens and be part of the transformation for its reopening and relaunch.”
