Speculation about Blue Bottle Coffee coming to Hong Kong began last August, and since then, its location at 38 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, was confirmed, along with an update on Insider Retail detailing that the lease of the two-storey, 3,000-square-foot space has been signed for six years.
We can also now confirm that said space is soft-opening as of today, with Blue Bottle Coffee shouting out the news on its Instagram page. For now, the opening hours are 8am–5pm for takeaway only, with all government-regulated safety protocols in place. Let’s hope we can have an in-house cuppa joe soon.
Cali-cool roaster Blue Bottle Coffee is known for its single-origin beans and cold-brew coffee, but what we’re wondering about now is their zero-waste plans for Hong Kong.
Blue Bottle CEO Bryan Meehan wrote in a blog post that climate change is inspiring the company to waste less and do more. And they are actually boldly proclaiming to make their insanely popular coffee shops zero waste by the end of 2020. Most zero-waste initiatives we hear about are between three and five years off, so that makes this pledge doubly exciting to hear. Remember, Blue Bottle is a coffee chain, which often means takeaway cups – which they’ll no longer be providing. This is an incredibly exciting and brave initiative, especially when they have enormous coffee competitors just one shop over streets across town.
The blog mentions Blue Bottle’s US shops, of which there are more than 50, but with the chain’s recent debuts in Japan, South Korea and now here in Hong Kong, we are hopeful that the initiative will gain ground in Asia too.
