Whether Mama is staying in or going out this year, she deserves to be celebrated! Here are our top picks for making her feel like the queen she surely is on Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, 8 May this year:

Ami’s “fine bistronomie” lunch & dinner menus

Casual fine dining is our preference these days, and one of our favourite spots for this type of elevated yet approachable cuisine is Ami. Executive Chef Nicolas Boutin has cooked up two fab Mother’s Day menus – lunch ($788/person for 4 courses or $988/person for 5 courses) and dinner ($1,188/person for 5 courses or $1,388/oerson for 6 courses) – showcasing seasonal French ingredients. Chef Boutin has ingeniously added a brightly coloured ingredient to each dish to attract Mum’s attention, from the yellow-orange starter of lobster and smoked pike roe, to the main of roasted pigeon with crimson beetroot mousseline, to the coral-pink rose-shaped dessert (pictured above) made up of strawberry Chantilly cream, rhubarb confit and honey ice cream. We recommend booking a table in the lovely outdoor garden area for a fresh change of pace.

aqua luna’s afternoon tea cruise

An afternoon tea experience like no other, book in for the Mother’s Day afternoon tea cruise ($399/adult; $100/child aged 4–11; +$100/glass of Veuve Clicquot) aboard iconic red-sailed junk aqua luna. This being Hong Kong, the teatime treats are not scones and finger sarnies but dim sum bites courtesy of Dim Sum Library, with the yum cha goodies ranging from black truffle shrimp dumplings to rose-shaped buns filled with red bean (veggie options are available upon request). You can set sail from 7–9 May, picking up and dropping off from Central Pier 9 or Tsim Sha Tsui Pier 1.

Ask for Alonzo’s pasta + Prosecco

This authentic, easy-going Italian eatery’s four locations on HK Island (Happy Valley, Quarry Bay, SoHo and Tai Hang) have a Mother’s Day special on board that comes with a complimentary glass of Prosecco or Mamma Mia negroni on the 8th – this delicious-looking saffron and crab linguine ($198). Stay tuned for more special treats for mums from the Ask for Alonzo teams on the day including Hair Arte Capelli vouchers for a bit of post-meal pampering.

Bathers’ beachfront lunch

Lunch beside the sea! We can almost hear the lapping waves when we think about indulging in the three-course set lunch menu ($375/person) at Bathers on Lower Cheung Sha Beach. Dig in with Mum to share starters like burrata with tomato, rocket and lemon, Caesar salad and salt-and-pepper squid. There are four options for mains (roast spring chicken, fish and chips, cheeseburger and a spicy eggplant pasta dish), and the Mother’s Day meal concludes with a choice of lemon pavlova or freshly baked chocolate brownie. Then it’s time to hit the beach…

Chilli Fagara’s DIY dumpling kits

For those mums who need a little help in the kitchen, we love Chilli Fagara’s wrap-at-home chilli dumpling kits ($198 for pick-up or $228 via Deliveroo) – a great way to get little ones cooking too. Each kit includes all the fresh ingredients needed to create 10 signature Chilli Fagara dumplings filled with either marinated minced pork or vegan KARANA jackfruit “meat”, along with illustrated wrapping (often the hardest part) and cooking instructions. The Sichuan eatery’s beloved MA and LA sauces are also included, but we recommend kids steering clear of these babies – they’re made with numbing homemade Sichuan peppercorn oil and fresh red chillies. Pre-order until 8 May for delivery via Deliveroo or pick-up at Chilli Fagara. To order from the restaurant, phone 2796 6866, email order@chillifagara.com or DM on Facebook or Instagram.

HUE’s meals with a view + aromatherapy gift

In addition to its stunning harbour views, your mum will love modern Australian restaurant HUE’s three-course lunch menu ($780/person) or four-course dinner menu ($950/person) this Mother’s Day. The starters options, such as spanner crab with salmon caviar, pickled onion and tomato consommé and roasted courgette with feta crumble and olive fondue, sound light and refreshing, while the mains pack heartier flavours – think Ibérico pork pluma with spiced pineapple, garlic chives and chimichurri and Wagyu sirloin with bone marrow, veal tongue, leek and bordelaise sauce. Mum can take her pick of fruity or nutty for dessert (strawberry and cream cheese mousse red velvet cake with strawberry sorbet or peanut butter parfait with chocolate cream, caramelised banana and cocoa-nib coulis). To top it all off, mothers will be gifted with an Aromatherapy Associates De-stress Mind & Muscles Collection kit ($260 value) for at-home enjoyment later on.
