Located in the Citiplaza mall in the residential area just a stone’s throw from the centre of Taikoo Shing, F.I.G.S. is a buzzy new indoor-outdoor destination concept by Silver Oak Group featuring all-day Mediterranean dining and drinks. Attached to Apéro Terrace Bar, the restaurant’s namesake acronym references the regions of France, Italy, Greece and Spain and spans from dishes ranging from lighter salads and Spanish tapas to more substantial offerings of Greek-style grilled meats, freshly made pastas and seafood dishes, all meant to be paired with curated cocktails and regional wines.

Helmed by chefs Gary Batra and Spanish native Javier Pérez, formerly of critically acclaimed FoFo by el Willy, the 6,000-square-foot space is expansive yet comfortable in a space-deprived place such as Hong Kong. The decor features Mediterranean elements with terracotta and tile accents on the floors, intimate Venetian lighting and high ceilings. We sat inside in a cosy booth for dinner given the cooler weather, though we liked the big terrace and would try it out when it’s warmer. There was a mix of large and smaller groups of office workers and residents, giving a more relaxed, casual vibe to the restaurant.

We ordered a mix of small and large plates recommended by the waitstaff, kicking off the meal with a traditional tapas of crystal tomato bread (HK$48) with artichoke. The tomatoes were fresh, yet the bread was admittedly more crunchy than we would have liked.

Never ones to pass on a French classic, we opted next for the seared foie gras (HK$138). The foie gras was nicely seared, with the sweet fig sauce a great complement, resulting in a lovely sweet and savoury balance. Unfortunately, the foie gras is served atop a cold brioche bun, which makes the dish fall a bit flat in our opinion.

The padrón peppers (HK$78) came next and were some of the best – and biggest of this type of pepper – we’ve ever had in Hong Kong. Well seasoned with Maldon sea salt, they paired nicely with a glass of Excuse My French Chardonnay (HK$88).

We were looking forward to the smoky pulpo (HK$158) and enjoyed the well-seasoned octopus with paprika, but the dish was smaller than anticipated given the price point, and the potatoes could have been crispier in order to balance the texture of the octopus.

On the other hand, the Manchego and truffle bikini sandwiches (HK$98) were larger than expected and very tasty to boot. A beloved Spanish street food, the cheese was perfectly melted and the bread toasted at the perfect temperature, with just a hint of truffle. Hands down, this was the highlight of our meal.

If you love Wagyu beef and pasta, consider ordering the Wagyu ragù (HK$208) – a tender bolognese sauce with penne. The dish was lighter than expected, but the pasta was not as al dente or as flavourful as we had hoped.

The last main dish was the pluma Ibérica (HK$278) – succulent sliced pork with honey mustard and vegetables. The texture of the pork was a bit chewy, yet the overall flavour profile of the dish is interesting and unique.

We rounded off the meal with the churros with chocolate dip (HK$88). Perfectly chewy and hot and crisp out of the oven, with just the right amount of sugar, these churros are ideal for sharing after a big meal.

With an airy vibe, relaxed atmosphere, varied menu with something for everyone and unique flavour combinations, F.I.G.S. is a fun, unexpected concept in a more residential neighbourhood of Hong Kong. We would definitely return if we’re in the area or looking for a space to accommodate a large group for brunch or dinner.
