As of today, the massive Wellington Street Tsui Wah has ceased operations of its Central location, popular with late-night clubbers from Lan Kwai Fong. Staff at the restaurant over the weekend stated that they have actually surrendered the lease on the property. It’s currently unconfirmed whether there are plans for the iconic restaurant to reopen in the future.
The closure follows a statement in February when the company confirmed pay cuts for three months to Tsui Wah board members and senior staff, stating, “If the epidemic and the socioeconomic environment further deteriorate, all members of the board will be subjected to further adjustment”, plus the closure of two branches in Causeway Bay, on Jaffe Road and Cannon Street, last August.
The cha chaan teng chain’s Wellington Street restaurant was a frequently featured landmark in many Hong Kong films over the years and attracted celebrities and tourists, as well as being a local favourite.
Tsui Wah has over 26 branches across Hong Kong, many open 24 hours, catering to late-night crowds.
