1. ThongSmith

ThongSmith’s awesome boat noodles have made the move from Bangkok to Wan Chai, the first overseas outpost for the burgeoning Thai chain. ThongSmith emphasises high-quality ingredients, including Australian Wagyu and Kurobuta pork, in its boat noodles (from HKD128), with the rich, aromatic, slow-simmered broth (available both with and without the traditional addition of pork blood) boasting true Thai heat. The menu offers tempting dishes exclusive to Hong Kong that we can’t wait to get stuck into, such as the Isaan-style pad thai (from HKD138) with roasted chilli paste and beef tongue green curry rice (HKD148). For dessert, we’ve heard rave reviews about the pandan coconut pudding (HKD18)

Maxim’s Palace’s new Mong Kok location inside MOKO mall brings together the old (hand-pushed dim sum carts) with the new (modern interpretations of classic Cantonese dishes). The well-established teahouse brand has leaped into the 21st century with the debut of Maxim’s Dim Sum Academy at this branch, leading workshops (from HKD450 pp) for budding cooks who are keen to master the art of yum cha. A dedicated dessert corner and newly launched kids’ dim sum set are more reasons to visit this time-honoured family-friendly restaurant.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! This seems to be the motto of S&S Hospitality with the launch of The Orient, a contemporary Asian steakhouse-with-a-view at Harbour City replacing the F&B group’s former Harbourside Grill. Slated for an end-March opening, The Orient is led by a steakhouse veteran, Mongolian chef Saruulgerel “Eggi” Enkh-Amgala, who long oversaw the grilled meat programme at TANGO, Lan Kwai Fong’s popular Argentinian steakhouse. At The Orient, chef Eggi’s focus is on premium cuts of dry-aged beef, marrying the classic techniques of the Spanish Josper grill with vibrant modern Asian touches.

You can immerse yourself in all things tea related at three-storey Chas By the Time in Sheung Wan. The ground floor features a takeaway tea counter and lifestyle shop, whilst the first floor plays host to sit-down dining. The second floor has been earmarked as an event and workshop space. The cosy, serene dining room is the heart of the operation, where tea-infused fusion dishes, both sweet and savoury, such as the Lapsang Souchong tea-braised beef orzo (HKD168) and jasmine tea panna cotta with spiced mango (HKD48), can be enjoyed alongside an impressive range of black, green, and white teas from Taiwan and China – and even floral varieties originating from farms right here in Hong Kong. This ambitious teahouse concept is the brainchild of tea master Chiu Yuet Ming of local tea brand The Chas and is an extension of her shops The Chas Yeh Yeh (Kwun Tong) and The Chas Long Long Ago (Tai Wai).

Opening on Mar. 30, Punjab Warriors by Hidden Gem Restaurants has large shoes to fill, taking over the space long held by TokyoLima. It’s boldly designed after a colonial-style Indian chophouse, both in its looks and affordable menu. The Hidden Gem team have pulled in the big guns with the appointment of chef Angshuman Adhikari of London’s Michelin-recommended Brigadiers, themed after the army mess clubs of India, to man the tandoor. Here at Punjab Warriors, we have extremely high smoky hopes for the signature Aussie lamb chops (HKD278) and Wagyu beef seekh kebab (HKD168) in particular.
