This year marks the fifth edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, featuring 242 galleries across 34 countries. At the invitation of Davidoff Art Initiative, we forayed into the whimsical world of modern art. Of course, we never wandered far from the one subject that is always on our mind: food.
Here’s our appreciation of this year’s Art Basel through Foodie’s eyes:
This Lunchbox Painting by Aida Makoto evoked the feeling of complete fullness (and a little bit of disgust) following a big pig-out session at our Foodie office.
All we could think about when walking past these giant raspberries by Petra Cortright is, Where can we find some granola to go with this?
These Spice Sheets by Haegue Yang really made us crave some curry.
Is it a picnic? Is it poetry? Are these riddles? We got dizzy trying to make sense of it all.
This is what happens when coffee beans undergo radiation and sprout into giant alien pods.
Stare at this Pumpkin Fopkk painting by Yayoi Kusama long enough and you might feel a seizure coming on.
Rotten to the core or golden until the end? We can’t decide, but it looks like a warning to our consumption-obsessed society to stop overtaxing Earth’s resources.
Camille Henrot’s Big Fish Small Fish painting could be a visual interpretation of the competitiveness of our world, about modern society’s self-destructive nature…or it could be an actual depiction of something the artist saw at the fish market (we saw the same thing at a fish market in Siem Reap!).
Is this artwork or just a giant tease? Because nothing tastes as refreshing as Coke in a bottle. We almost popped open this Cildo Meireles installation.
Finally, these T-shirt bundles show us that art truly does imitate life. We walked by and did a double take, because this seriously reminded us of our office floor the day after a Foodie event as we unpack stock.
Love it, hate it or if you’re simply just curious, Art Basel is definitely worth a visit, especially during Hong Kong’s dreary March weather. This modern art exhibition runs from 23–25 March 2017 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wanchai.
