Thwarted travel plans? Lacklustre Friday nights? Gym closures? There’s no denying that this year has been a killer. But the effects of the pandemic stretch beyond the woes of social distancing and government restrictions. Many people are struggling to put together their next meal. And you, my friend, are in a position of privilege.

Even before COVID-19 hit, the fact is that 20% of children in Hong Kong do not get three meals a day, and one in three elderly struggle to meet their basic nutritional needs. Food poverty has always been a pressing issue in Hong Kong, and the pandemic has only made things worse. Food prices have skyrocketed, leading to a spike in the number of people requiring food assistance. At the same time, charities have witnessed a reduction in food donations from companies, which are themselves struggling financially.

Heart-to-Heart campaign Hong Kong

An initiative launched by a group of passionate local university students, the Heart-to- Heart HK campaign fundraises donations for Foodlink Foundation, a charity that delivers surplus food from F&B outlets across the city to the needy. All proceeds from the campaign will fund the food bags that they’re packing for the needy amidst the pandemic.

Check out the campaign’s Facebook page and Instagram page to learn more.
