A record 31 restaurants in Hong Kong have won prestigious diamond awards in China’s 2024 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide, including fine-dining venues CHAAT, Hansik Goo, Lai Ching Heen, and VEA.
Similar to the Michelin Guide, the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide awards restaurants with one to three diamonds; one diamond denotes a must-eat with a group, two diamonds is fit for a celebratory dinner, and three diamonds suggests a once-in-a-lifetime meal.
Hansik Goo celebrates its first year placing in the guide with one diamond, similar to The Chinese Library. Caprice and Ta Vie have won two diamonds. Amber and 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana have placed on the list with two diamonds. Howard’s Gourmet is this year’s only three-diamond restaurant.
Launched in 2018 by Chinese shopping platform Meituan, the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide aims to standardise fine-dining fare in Asia, creating a restaurant guide with a Chinese perspective in mind.
The annual guide evaluates restaurants based on culinary skills, innovation and inheritance, and customer experience. The 2024 edition of the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide covers 30 cities in total, including Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok, Singapore, and Tokyo.
