For the longest time, the world’s cheapest Michelin star restaurant was the title claimed by Tim Ho Wan, Hong Kong’s fan-favourite dim sum chain and now a staple of Chinese meals abroad.

But, Tim Ho Wan’s Sham Shui Po location, once claiming a Michelin star in 2023, lost its credit in the Michelin Guide Hong Kong 2024, only earning itself a Bib Gourmand award. The title for the cheapest Michelin star restaurant in the world can rightfully be claimed by Yat Lok, the city’s signature barbeque roast meat shop.

Since 1957, the Chu family have marinated and grilled their signature roast geese at Yat Lok, served with garlic scallion and a delicate soy sauce. Whilst most famous for the goose, the restaurant also serves BBQ and crispy pork and soy and steamed chicken.

The cheap meal at the world’s cheapest Michelin star restaurant will only cost you HKD72, featuring a combination of any chicken, BBQ crispy pork, or goose cut, and white rice.

If you want to go overboard and indulge, Yat Lok’s half or whole roasted goose comes out to HKD370 and HKD740, respectively.
