Hong Kongers LOVE sushi – it’s a fact. Walking around TST, it seems as if there are hundreds of all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurants around. And while we love the fancy sushi places in Central and the unlimited sashimi spots in Mongkok, there are days when we just crave simple sushi but don’t want to spend a small fortune. So here’s a realistic guide to quick, wallet-friendly sushi places around town.

K-Roll

While K-Roll specialises in Korean food, kimbap resembles Japanese sushi rolls, but with extra sauce and fresh flavours from the inclusion of lots of vegetables. We especially love the eatery’s tofu-honey korrito, a Korean sushi burrito where the flavours explode in your mouth.

Central: Shop 41, L3 Concourse Level, Hong Kong MTR Station, 2563 2811

Sheung Wan: 6A Bonham Strand, 2234 5505

Wanchai: Shop 104, 1/F, Brim 28, 28 Harbour Road, 2806 3488

Chotto Maki

Chotto Maki cures all cravings for classic American-style sushi rolls – check out the California roll ($68), Philadelphia roll ($68) and mango dynamite roll ($68). The restaurant’s most popular roll, dubbed Sea Monster ($78), is a huge one filled with tempura prawn, mayo crab stick and garlic chips. You can also customise your own roll for $78 if you can’t find what you’re looking for on the menu.

Admittedly, Sushi Express isn’t the best-tasting sushi spot in Hong Kong, but at $3 a piece, the price is unbeatable. Located at MTR stations and malls around the city, most Sushi Express shops are solely for takeaway.

Japanese Food Express

Dive into Kwai Chung Plaza and you’ll be surrounded by young’uns scrambling to find the latest food and fashion trends. Japanese Food Express (大滿足) is one of the many hand-roll sushi stalls located at the mall, but it’s also the one that is usually crowded with a long queue. Tucked away in the corner of the food section, this takeaway joint is known for its generously portioned sea urchin hand roll ($40). They have over 30 other roll options too if you’re not a fan of buttery uni goodness.
