At the Foodie office we spend a lot of time discussing coffee and sharing notes about the newer ones we have discovered about town. These 6 have particularly caught our eyes over the last month or so, and so we wanted to share them with you coffee addicts.

Little Cove Espresso
Taking over the former premise of Colour Brown, Little Cove Express inherited the former vendor’s expertise in coffee but also introduced a new ethos centered around well-being. Basically a superfood heaven, they sell everything from bulletproof coffee to organic colas to chia bowls as well as an array of items on the menu to suit vegans, vegetarians, paleo dieters – you name it. Their interior captures the casual, relaxed essence of Sai Kung and they also have an outdoor area for those who fancy an alfresco experience.

La Station
A venture started by three French entrepreneurs , La Station aims to deliver a complete authentic European coffee experience that starts from quality coffee and fresh hand-made tidbits right down to an interior that mimics the appearance of a European train station. The curved wall on one side resembles the architecture of classic subway stations while the red tiled one on the other side reminds you of the typical Hong Kong MTR station. The copper and marble bar is a classy touch as well. They also serve impressive choices of dessert provided by Paul Lafayet, who happens to be the father of two of the three owners.

Why 50
The Why 50 name came as a result of the coffee shop owners’ intent of paying homage to coffee farmers, those at the very origin of the supply chain. It is based on the idea that 50 coffee beans go into a shot of espresso and when you take into account the number of espressos that are served a day just in Hong Kong alone, you can imagine the sheer amount of sweat and dedication coffee farmers put in everyday just to make your morning routine cup of coffee possible. Apart from a brilliant name with a profound meaning, Why 50 also serves amazing espressos, unsurprisingly, by the coffee machine made by industry giants Slayer and roasted by the coffee scientist Keith Fong from Bloom Coffee House in Macau.

N.O.T Specialty Coffee
Unassumingly tucked away inside the lift lobby of a commercial building, N.O.T is known as much for their quality coffee as their attentive, friendly services. With an abundance of over-commercialized coffee shops around town, a deliberate effort to come up with a perfect recipe to suit the palates of each and every customer and to be able to know them by name is increasingly hard to come by, but that’s the sort of personal experience you can expect from N.O.T. Contrary to their name, they do serve specialty-grade coffee, as well as pour-over coffee and delightful cakes which are alternated daily.

yNOT Coffee
If you’re looking for something new and quirky for a coffee fix, go to yNot. Their specialty is what’s named Nitro Coffee. After the usual roasting and grinding, coffee beans are submerged in cold distilled water for 72 hours and then infused with nitrogen gas. When served, they’re released through a pressurized tap like what you would find with beer. The end result is a silky, creamy and stout-like coffee that’s also exceptionally aromatic. They also offer over 20 kinds of flavoured lattes ranging from cucumber to banana to rose.

Steam
Steam is pretty much next to Opendoor Cafe + Courtyard, which means lower Sheung Wan/SYP is becoming far more espresso snob friendly. This cafe opened a month ago and serves pies from Tai Tai Pie Pie along with homemade sandwiches and other edible goodies. Their beans are a blend of South American and Asian beans and they’re roasted in a roastery on High Street in Sai Ying Pun. They use Muji milk and have no non-dairy milk alternatives. Very cute cups and saucers though!
