Foodie is hosting its annual Food’s Future Summit this coming September, a two-day event dedicated to inspiring and initiating change within the world of food.
For the first time ever, we will be partnering with the Consulate-General of Sweden to feature their country, which also happens to be home to one of the world’s leading sustainable food providers, IKEA. At the Summit, expect to learn about Swedish policies, products and practices that are paving the way for a sustainable food-based future.
But, for now, check out our tribute to IKEA’s top 5 most underrated foods that are both tasty and environmentally sound.

IKEA’s vegetable “meatballs” are a wondrous mixture of chickpeas, green peas, carrot, bell pepper, corn and kale. They’re as sustainable as it gets. By eating this dish, you not only get a delicious meal but also reduce your carbon footprint. These veggie balls are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, as well as gluten-free, soy-free, nut-free and lactose-free diners (just about everyone!).
Salmon

Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) approved, environmentally friendly salmon that’s full of protein and omega-3 fatty acids – this ticks all the right boxes. This responsibly farmed fish is not only good for you and the earth but also mega tasty. There are no additives or preservatives, so you can be sure it’s safe for the whole family. We always have a pack in the freezer for healthy, last-minute dinner options.

These peeled cold-water shrimp are certified to Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards; this ensures the protection of fish and shrimp species around the world for years to come. We love that we can eat these with peace of mind, knowing that our enjoyment is not at the expense of another species’ survival. For a delicious prawn cocktail recipe courtesy of IKEA, click here.
Chocolate

IKEA’s chocolate is great because it’s fair trade and UTZ certified, which “ensures sustainable farming standards and good conditions for workers”. Each chocolate purchase you make at IKEA prevents one from a company that profits from child or slave labour. In terms of taste, you can never go wrong with IKEA’s chocolate, and it comes in varieties ranging from hazelnut chocolate to dark chocolate.

These five-ingredient chicken meatballs are deliciously simple and healthy. The all-natural ingredients include chicken, onion, potato starch, salt and spices. Not only are they full of protein, but by choosing this white-meat option, you are also reducing your carbon footprint far more than with the alternative red-meat variety.
