Pork chop rice at Delicious Kitchen
We’re addicted to these honey-glazed fried pork chops with rice ($60, including a beverage), and as the name of the restaurant confidently states, this dish is simply delicious. Served piping hot with a sugary, crisp outer crust, the juicy chops go well with the savoury mixed vegetable rice served alongside. Sure, this dish technically come from Shanghainese origins, but we can’t help stopping here almost every time we’re in the ‘hood. It’s a pretty decent deal in shopping mecca Causeway Bay.

Fresh dough sticks at 新發粥店
Come at 11am and you’re guaranteed sizzling-hot dough sticks ($10 for 2) plucked fresh from the frying wok. This is our go-to spot for this sinfully good local breakfast favourite. The only way to eat these fried perfections is when they are still crispy hot on the outside with a soft, stretchy interior. These sticks come in pairs – although not a splurge for the wallet, they are definitely a splurge for the waistline. A bevy of congee and rice noodle rolls are also sold here, but we are mostly enamoured with the giant wok of oil full of floating youtiao.

Cart noodles at Sun Kee
Sun Kee’s cart noodles (from $45) are a delicious way to customise your dish to your individual preferences, and come every lunch hour, crowds queue up outside this humble eatery. Hungry diners can choose from a variety of noodle types and toppings using the menu sheets at the table. But beware – everything is in Chinese (you can always point to a neighbour’s bowl if you like what you see and order that way). Our favourite combo is thick vermicelli with fresh bean curd sheets, brisket and fish tofu. Slurp up!

Steamed milk pudding at Yee Shun Milk Company
Yee Shun is easy to spot – you’ll either notice the big cow-head emblem or the shelves lined with small bowls. Each bowl of milk pudding ($25–35) can be served cold or hot, and there are plenty of flavours to choose from. We tend to go traditional and dip into the double-skin milk pudding, which is creamy and silky smooth. For egg lovers, there’s the yellow egg yolk and milk pudding, which comes with plenty of eggy goodness. For those looking for a zingy way to warm up, there’s also the spicy ginger milk pudding to wake up the senses.

Sticky rice and dough stick rolls at Shanghai Hong Kong Noodle Shop
Let’s face it – we’re not here for the ambience, but this no-frills shop serves up tasty rice rolls ($28) perfect for a satisfying on-the-run meal. The service is brisk, and you can watch the rice rolls being made at the small stall near the restaurant entrance – just be aware that you could get yelled at if you’re blocking anyone’s path! Sticky rice is flattened into a sheet, then sprinkled with pork floss and preserved vegetables. A crisp fried dough stick is added, and then the whole thing is rolled up into one tasty, carbalicious meal.
