Open since February, El Macho is the bright light at the end of a tunnel. Situated on the corner of Third Street and Eastern Street, this 20-seat Mexican joint is a welcome addition to Sai Ying Pun.
The colourful, festive decor is striking and inspired by the Mexican holiday of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead). Have fun dressing up in a sombrero or poncho before tackling the onslaught that’s to come…
Nachos Guapo ($98) is El Macho’s signature dish. We’ve all been there with nachos that don’t have enough cheese, guacamole and sour cream to cover the lot. Not here. Each nacho has it own individual toppings, ensuring you’re satisfied with each and every tortilla chip.
The chicken quesadillas ($78) offer a simple dish made with love, definitely to be shared as the portion is supersized.
The Angus beef fajitas ($128) showcase grilled Angus steak and bell peppers with DIY flour tortillas and toppings. This was the one that finally pushed me over the edge – I’m not complaining, but do go to El Macho with an empty stomach.
Verdict
El Macho is a great spot for a casual meal and drinks. The fun vibe is driven by the owner, Chris, who also runs another SYP favourite, Flying Pig Bistro, and is usually on hand to make sure that when leaving, you’re already planning the next visit.
